Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

Position: Recreation Specialist

The Recreation Specialist is responsible for the direct supervision of the clients in their assigned area, and for enforcing applicable rules and providing assistance as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or 60 college credits courses in Human Services field or High School Diploma or GED with 1 year of relevant shelter experience. The position also requires a demonstrated ability in verbal and written communication, including basic computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally (oral and written) with Spanish-speaking clients required.

Recreation Specialist Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Plan, coordinate, publicize, implement and facilitate support groups, recreational activities, special events and holiday programs. Update and post printed materials and encourage client participation.
  2. Assist in the development and implementation of new programs aimed at enhancing client's motivation through socialization and the development of leisure time skills.
  3. Coordinate programs with case managers in order to facilitate success of In-Reach sessions.
  4. Develop contacts with various sources for off-site activities.
  5. Assist in preparing and submitting written and statistical reports.
  6. Provide aftercare to assigned clients who have been placed / discharged from the facility.
