Position Objective:

The Security System Administrator is responsible for the comprehensive administration of all current Electronic Security Systems (ESS) within the Metro-North Railroad (MNR) Security Department and technical projects related to the MNR security program. This includes troubleshooting and maintaining intrusion detection, access control, video management, intercoms, badging, and other command and control sub-systems. The role ensures the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of these systems by performing design, installation, configuration, and maintenance tasks. Additionally, the Security System Administrator will troubleshoot system issues, perform regular updates and backups, and implement security measures to protect data. This position collaborates with internal and external partners to address security system issues and provides pivotal support to the Assistant Chief Security Officer Projects & Tech in the development and coordination of advanced security technology projects and programs

Responsibilities:

Administration of Electronic Security Systems (ESS):

  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of all ESS components, including intrusion detection, access control, video systems management, intercoms, and badging systems.

  • Ensure the continuous availability and optimal performance of all ESS.

    System Maintenance and Updates:

  • Perform regular system maintenance, updates, patches, and upgrades to maintain security and functionality.

  • Conduct routine backups and recovery procedures to safeguard data integrity.

    Troubleshooting and Support:

  • Diagnose and resolve system issues promptly to minimize downtime and maintain system reliability .

  • Provide technical support and assistance to end-users, ensuring quick resolution of security system-related problems .

    Security Measures Implementation:

  • Develop and implement security protocols and measures to protect the organization's ESS from unauthorized access and potential threats.

  • Monitor system activity to detect and respond to security breaches or anomalies.

    Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Work closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to address and resolve security system issues.

  • Assist the Assistant Chief Security Officer in the development and execution of security technology projects and programs.

    Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of system configurations, procedures, and security protocols.

  • Generate regular reports on system performance, incidents, and maintenance activities to analyze functionality, and identify and prioritize issues to take appropriate action.

    Compliance and Best Practices:

  • Ensure ESS compliance with industry standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements related to electronic security systems.

  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and best practices in ESS management and determine what and how to implement at MNR to enhance system effectiveness.

    Project Support:

  • Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of new security technology projects.

  • Coordinate with relevant departments to ensure successful deployment and integration of new systems.

    Training and Development:

  • Provide training and guidance to staff on the proper use and maintenance of electronic security systems.

  • Continuously seek opportunities for professional development to stay current with advancements in ESS and IT security.

    Emergency Response:

  • Participate in the organization's emergency response efforts by ensuring the functionality and readiness of security systems.

  • Provide technical support during security incidents and coordinate with emergency response teams as needed.

    Project Management:

  • Assist in the management of ESS-related projects from initiation to completion, ensuring that project goals and timelines are met.

  • Develop and update project plans, allocate resources, and monitor progress to ensure successful project delivery.

  • Communicate project status, risks, and issues to stakeholders, providing regular updates and documentation.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and implementation of security projects.

    Required Qualifications:

    Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting operating system software, network communication gear , and storage area network equipment.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and support technical issues both remotely and on-site using standard tools and techniques.

  • Ability to read and understand schematic diagrams, technical manuals, and documentation such that supported equipment and software can be maintained with minimal training.

  • Experience with performing system administration in a Microsoft Windows Active Directory environment.

  • Extensive working level knowledge in planning, installing , and configuring at one of the industry standard Video Management Solutions (for example GENETEC, VERINT, MILESTONE, ONSSI).

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with various organizational levels.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments with fluctuating priorities while adhering to deadlines.

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and Access and/or equivalent software applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

  • Ability to attend technical training both on and off-site.

  • Must be able to deal effectively with emergencies and be willing to respond on a 24x7 basis, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating, on-call schedule.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

    The following is/are preferred :

  • Working experience in installation/configuration of Lenel OnGuard Software; a LENEL factory “Gold” certification or equivalent is strongly preferred.

  • Working knowledge of manipulating data in Standard Query Language (SQL) servers or other similar Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) products.

  • Working knowledge of Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) system development, configuration, and system administration.

  • Working knowledge of deploying, maintaining, and administering virtual machine environments .

  • General understanding of basic Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networking, routing, and switching.

  • General understanding of cyber-security principles and standard cyber-security practices.

  • Advanced knowledge of standard industrial safety and security practices and methods.

  • Advanced knowledge of physical security controls, security system design , and operation.

  • Familiarity with Metro-North Railroad operations, policies, and procedures.

    Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field. Demonstrated equivalent experience, education and/or technical credentials to include four (4) additional years of related experience may be considered in place of a degree.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a System Administrator, and/or working with complex integrated systems and networks.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience managing projects.

    The following is/are preferred:

  • Multi-site critical national infrastructure environment, preferable in the public transportation sector.

    Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
