Meta Software Engineer, Linux Userspace (PhD) in New York, New York

Summary:

As a member of Linux Userspace at Meta, you will work closely with open source communities and production customers to shape the future of the Linux ecosystem. We contribute directly to projects such as CentOS, systemd, bpftrace, bpfilter, RPM, and more!About the Linux Userspace team: We work with the Linux community to improve the Linux ecosystem for both the company and the billions of Linux systems worldwide. We do this by engaging with the broader Linux development community.

Required Skills:

Software Engineer, Linux Userspace (PhD) Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and set direction in how Meta develops its Linux-based operating systems.

  2. Develop APIs in the system-level framework layer that allow other layers of the stack to implement compelling and performant use cases.

  3. Collaborate with the Linux community and Meta production engineers to build end-to-end solutions.

  4. Work with production teams to debug functional, performance and stability issues across the stack.

  5. Build on operating system internals. Set technical direction for significant improvements.

  6. Produce clean readable code with upfront debuggability and testability.

  7. Participate in design reviews and code reviews for the team and open source projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.

  2. Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.

  3. Experience in *nix (Linux, BSDs, or another UNIX-like OS).

  4. Experience coding in an industry-standard language (e.g. Java, Python, C, C++, PHP).

  5. Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

  1. Research and software engineer experience demonstrated via an internship, work experience, coding competitions, or open-source contributions.

  2. Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as publications at leading workshops, journals or conferences such as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, or similar.

  3. Demonstrated relevant systems specialist knowledge through prior experience or thesis concentration.

  4. Experience working with memory management.

  5. Experience solving complex problems and comparing alternative solutions, trade-offs, and diverse points of view to determine a path forward.

Public Compensation:

$56.25/hour to $173,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
