Position Summary
The Large Animal Transplantation Program at the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with a strong interest in transplantation biology, xenotransplantation, and large animal care to join our team. Our research focuses on developing strategies to induce tolerance to solid organ transplantation using large animal models. Under the supervision of Principal Investigator Dr. Greg Nowak and the post-doctoral fellows, the candidate will support the research program and take on responsibilities related to animal care and basic immunological assays.
Responsibilities
- Provide daily care and checkups for experimental animals, including handling, restraint, blood and body fluid collection, drug administration, and tissue harvest.
- Administer medications and treatments as directed by the Principal Investigator and post-doctoral fellows.
- Prepare medications, clinical infusions, and lab reagents; assist with animal and laboratory experiments.
- Conduct experiments in accordance with SOPs and regulatory protocols.
- Maintain high scientific standards and adhere to safe laboratory practices.
- Order and manage inventory of animal, clinical, and laboratory supplies.
- Maintain a detailed laboratory/electronic notebook and database related to tasks.
- Collect, document, and communicate observations, data, and research materials.
- Foster a culture of scientific excellence, integrity, efficiency, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Communicate effectively with the PI and team members.
- Perform other duties as necessary for the functioning of the laboratory and research projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or physics or related science or equivalent in education, training and experience.
- Ability to work in a neat and orderly manner in compliance with safety, federal, state, and institutional regulations for humane animal care and welfare.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Problem identification and troubleshooting skills.
- Sense of ownership and responsibility for assigned tasks.
- Effective and timely communication with team members and other stakeholders.
- Ability to work with laboratory animals and provide optimal care and support.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions/protocols with dedication and commitment.
- Strong communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience, knowledge, or interest in animal handling, care, and husbandry; clinical and laboratory research.
Other Requirements
- The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a drug screening test prior to a final offer of employment being made
- Participation in the medical surveillance program
- Ability to work with laboratory animals
- Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
- Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
