New York University Assistant Research Scientist (Part-Time) - Jones Lab in New York

The Jones Lab in the Department of Chemistry at New York University is seeking an individual to be appointed as a part-time assistant research scientist under the supervision of Dr. Alisha Jones.

The Jones lab aims to develop and apply biophysical and biochemical approaches to make it easier to study RNA structure and dynamics. Once we harness the molecular details associated with how an RNA is structured, we improve our ability to link it to the biological processes it regulates and therapeutically target it when it is implicated in disease.

The applicant will contribute to general lab operations as well as ongoing research on the function of RNA structural biology. Please see our website for more details.

What You’ll Do

● Prepare stock solutions, reagents, and enzymes related to biochemistry techniques (RNA, DNA, protein expression and purification)

● Prepare relevant medias, antibiotics, reagents, and culture plates for cell growth

● Establish and maintain a chemicals and consumables inventory

● Carry out cleaning and sterilization of glassware for laboratory experiments

● Work independently (following training) and collaboratively on research projects

● Perform molecular cloning and biochemistry techniques

● Consult research literature for planning experimental protocols

● Maintain a detailed record of experiments in a laboratory notebook

● Train others in technical protocols

● Attend laboratory meetings and planning sessions

● Adhere to institutional safety standards

● Other tasks as needed to contribute to the efficient and effective functioning of a research laboratory

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $18/hr - $26/hr. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

The ideal candidate is an organized, detail-oriented, proactive professional, comfortable working independently. Opportunities for advancement, such as conducting more advanced lab techniques are possible with increased skills proficiency.

This position will provide the candidate with an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in biochemistry and biophysics before pursuing an advanced degree. We are looking for someone with a growth mindset and enthusiasm for science.

Skills and Experience You Bring:

● Bachelor’s degree in science (Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Physics) or related discipline required.

● 0-1 years of experience with a general expectation of approximately 2 years at the junior rank

● Prior experience in a research laboratory is preferred; candidates with an established work history will also be strongly considered.

● Exemplary organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to keep accurate digital records of work performed. Candidates with coding experience will be considered.

● Strong time management and commitment to defined schedules.

● Strong communication skills.

● Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise.

● Ability to apply and perform new techniques and protocols

● Ability to follow instruction with an eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and be mentored.

● Ability to use good judgment in managing deadlines and responding to inquiries
