Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Senior Administrator, the Assistant Athletic Trainer assists the Head Athletic Trainer with the prevention care, injury evaluation, first aid, treatment, and rehabilitation of all student athletes. The incumbent will be assigned specific team coverage.

Essential Functions:

  1. Athletic Training Activities: This function finds its incumbent providing a full array of services related to proper running of the athletic training program. By way of illustration and not limitation, this function:
  • Administers first aid treatment to injured varsity athletes. (CPR, bandages, basic first aid).

  • Assists in development of an injury prevention program (tapes ankles, stretching exercises, massages, etc.)

  • Assists Head Trainer in providing trainer coverage for all varsity practices and home games.

  • Assists in the maintenance of student records and helps in the processing of insurance claims.

  • Provides guidance and assistance to student-athletes on a range of personal issues, as required.

  • Assists in monitoring and coordinating training and practice sessions, ensuring that all appropriate safety guidelines and standards are maintained.

  • Assists in developing policies and procedures for safe operation of the Athletic Training room.

  • Directs injured players, as needed to obtain medical treatment.

  • Determines suitability of injured athletes to continue sports participation. Assists through treatment, the best way for athletes to return to active participation.

  • Works with Head Trainer and Team Physician to make appointments for treatment and rehabilitation.

  • Provides assistance in the coordination and administration of the Athletic Training program, as required.

  • Represents the sports program to various institutional programs and to government agencies, students, parents and the general public.

  1. NCAA Compliance: Knowledge of and adherence to all applicable NCAA rules, regulations, bylaws, constitutions and related university rules, regulations and policies.

Additional Functions:

Performs other duties as assigned.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Athletic Training and BOC certification as an ATC.

  • Must be licensed to practice as an ATC in NJ or eligible to apply.

  • Must possess the ability to foster a cooperative environment.

  • Must be able to organize and coordinate.

  • Must have the ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have the ability to work on nights & weekends.

  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree preferred.

  • Should possess working knowledge of the NCAA.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students.
