The Role

Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.

This position is for an Engineering Design Manager 1 within Department E26 – Aircraft Carrier Engineering Platform Piping Systems. The person filling this role will lead a team of designers primarily responsible for platform piping system design products on new construction programs, including assembly, pipe detail fabrication, and technical authority drawings, as well as 3D product model files. The role entails interfacing and collaborating with our downstream customers, e.g., Planning and Trades, to find solutions to problems that require Engineering support. Additional responsibilities include providing support as needed for other groups within the department and the division, including ventilation design, RCOH piping system design products, and FORD Class Hull Planning Yard design products. The team is expected to work collaboratively and share resources as necessary with the other design and engineering teams within the department to meet deadlines and cross-train designers. The Engineering Design Manager 1 is expected to track all team work products to ensure they are completed on schedule, within budget, and with high quality.

Must Have

Design Apprentice certification or Associate's degree in Design with 6 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience;

Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline plus 4 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience;

or a Master's degree in a relevant discipline and 2 years of applicable experience.

  • Pipefitting experience

  • Leadership/management experience

  • Strong sense of ownership

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to multitask and balance priorities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word/Excel/PowerPoint)
