The Affera™ Prism-1 Mapping Software is a 3D visualization software used for mapping of electrical activity in the heart, navigating catheters within the heart chambers, streaming intra cardiac and surface lead electrograms and annotating 3D and 2D data points. The Mapping Software and system integrates with the Affera™ Ablation System to record ablation telemetry and annotate in 3D regions where energy delivery is applied. These and other medical devices in the Medtronic Cardiac Ablation Solutions portfolio are used to diagnose and treat cardiac arrhythmias.

As a Distinguished Signal Processing Engineer, you will be developing the next generation technology for treatment of heart rhythm disorders. You will be responsible for leading development of novel signal processing algorithms and software for computing signals and 3D heart models that are displayed to the physician during cardiac ablation procedures. For example, you may work on algorithms for catheter localization, mapping of ventricular tachycardias and substrate, ablation tagging, and integration with other devices in the cardiac electrophysiology lab. You will be responsible for advancing mapping and ablation algorithms through the product development process including bench, preclinical, and clinical testing. You will collaborate with some of the industry's prominent experts in the field of medical device engineering, will mentor signal processing engineers, software developers, and other teams internally, and will disseminate knowledge of cardiac electrophysiology and mapping and ablation technologies, all while working in a fun and collaborative environment. Medtronic offers competitive salary, 401(k), and generous medical coverage to suit your needs.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience conceiving, designing, developing, and testing real-time, high-performance, high-reliability code for digital signal processing and computational algorithms, as well as deep knowledge of the state of the art for diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. The ideal candidate will take ownership of key software features while working collaboratively with other engineering teams and is passionate about working on a product that will have a positive impact on the lives of millions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conceive, design, develop, and test signal processing algorithms, implemented as high-performance high-reliability production code for a medical device.

  • Collaborate with hardware engineering team on electronics and firmware to support signal processing needs.

  • Manage the signal processing pipelines within Affera software products.

  • Verification and validation of signal processing and computational algorithms.

  • Conceive, design, develop, and test computational geometry algorithms.

  • Analyze bench, preclinical, and clinical data, as well as feedback from clinicians, to inform design decisions and verification activities.

  • Guide and mentor less experienced signal processing engineers and software developers.

  • Disseminate knowledge of cardiac electrophysiology and mapping and ablation technology both inside Medtronic and externally via meetings, presentations, and publications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree

  • 15 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 13 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of signal processing fundamentals including filter design (continuous and discrete) and statistics.

  • Deep understanding of cardiac electrophysiology and of mapping and ablation technology.

  • Hands on experience in medical device software development, ideally working with custom/prototype hardware.

  • Understanding of computational geometry concepts and algorithms.

  • Proficiency with software development on Linux operating system.

  • Experience programming in Python and C++.

  • Ability to work in an agile development environment.

  • Strong work ethic and entrepreneurial drive.
