Burns & McDonnell Staff Electrical Engineer (Boston) in Newton, Massachusetts

Description

  • Perform electrical engineering design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion and construction including partnering with a multi-discipline team to develop designs of electrical substations to support the safe and reliable delivery of electricity.

  • Modify and review production drawings for a variety of substation projects.

  • Design electrical components for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.

  • Apply strong knowledge of commonly used electrical engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the electrical engineering services industry.

  • Research and compile project related data as required by the project managers.

  • Update drawings provided by senior engineers to verify corrections are made within multiple CAD related software.

  • Compile information for client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration for the design of substation.

  • Perform field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients.

  • Perform facets of substation physical design including yard layout plans, sections and details; grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material.

  • Perform facets of substation protection and control design including panel arrangements, one lines/single lines, three lines, AC schematics, DC schematics, equipment wiring and relay panel wiring.

  • Perform or oversee quality review of above facets of substation design.

  • Prepare equipment specifications.

  • Provide support for our clients during construction.

  • Perform field inspections and compliance documentation.

  • Lead a team of single- or multi-discipline professionals to ensure project success.

  • Present designs and proposals to clients, permitting authorities, public interest groups, etc.

  • Correspond and meeting with clients, contractors, and vendors.

  • Participate in project proposal efforts.

  • Telecommuting is allowed up to 30 days per year.

  • Primarily domestic travel with occasional international travel up to 15% of the time for internal meetings, client, and site visits.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree, in Electrical Engineering, Electric Power Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology*, or a directly related field from an ABET accredited program plus three (3) years of electrical engineering experience.

Alternatively, the employer will also accept a Master’s degree, in Electrical Engineering, Electric Power Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology*, or a directly related field from an ABET accredited program plus two (2) years of electrical engineering experience in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree plus three (3) years of described experience.

*A Degree in any Engineering Technology field must be accompanied by the successful completion of the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) Exam.

Must have two (2) years of experience in each of the following:

  • Electrical standard engineering techniques and procedures as applied to power system design.

  • National Electrical Safety Code and IEEE / ANSI Standards.

  • AutoCAD, MicroStation, 2D and 3D rendering programs, Microsoft Office Suite, CDEGS, or WinIGS.

  • Protection and Control implementation of SEL, GE, or Siemens-type relays for power system protection and control.

  • Relay and Device Communication Protocols such as IEC61850, Ethernet, DNP3 or Modbus.

  • One-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, electrical protection schematics, wiring/connection diagrams, cable schedules, bill of materials, and equipment layouts.

  • Performing voltage drop and AC/DC equipment sizing calculations.
