North Wind Site Services is focused on providing engineering, program management, and environmental remediation services including investigation and characterization, environmental restoration, unexploded ordnance/military munitions response (MMRP), regulatory public involvement services, environmental compliance, logistics, and records and facility management.

POSITION PURPOSE:

Provide radiological controls oversight of site remediation activities. Monitor job-site activities involving radioactivity to ensure compliance with applicable company and job-specific policies/procedures along with applicable government regulations. Maintain and operate radiation measuring equipment; perform decontamination activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain and operate radiation measuring equipment; perform decontamination activities.

  • Provide radiological controls oversight of site remediation activities.

  • Interact daily with Health Physics management to report radiological issues.

  • Perform daily monitoring of radiological work, radiological surveying, soil sampling, air sampling, and evaluation, and aid in the preparation of documents that support the transfer of materials and equipment for disposal or release.

  • Operate global positioning system equipment coupled with NaI detector and count rate meter. Perform gamma scanning surveys.

  • Operate bench-top detectors for alpha/beta analysis of swipes and air samples.

  • Provide radiological oversight and leadership for all crew personnel to ensure the highest radiological standards are kept.

  • Complete radiological monitoring survey reports.

  • Interpret radiological control requirements, participate in task scoping, and provide technical review of work documents.

  • Interface with customer radiological and operations management personnel concerning radiological issues.

  • Provide guidance for proper handling and documentation associated with radioactive material and sources.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accountability and Authority:

  • Accountable and reports to Health Physics Technician Supervisor.

  • Accountable for quality of radiation surveys both in terms of measurement accuracy and in quality and completeness of written survey records.

  • Accountable for completing all Job Performance Measures within 90 days of job assignment.

  • Has authority to coach Radiological Workers on proper radiological work behavior.

  • Has authority to stop or pause work for unsafe or perceived unsafe conditions or practices.

  • Directs the work product and methods of Junior Health Physics Technicians.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Three years demonstrated experience at an NRC-licensed, USACE-operated, or DOE-operated facility performing work as a health physics or radiation safety technician.

  • Knowledge of 10CFR20 and/or 10CFR835 regulations.

  • Fundamental understanding of radiation and radiation measurement instruments.

  • High school diploma or GED.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform basic mathematics.

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and stoop for up to six hours per day.

  • Ability to wear a powered air-purifying respirator.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel and work overtime as needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors or Associates degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in science, engineering, or technology.

  • Certification by National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists.

  • Experience working at an environmental remediation site, preferably a USACE site.

  • Previous experience performing gamma scanning surveys.

  • Previous experience using a Protean automatic alpha/beta counter.

  • Previous experience with gamma spectroscopy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and stoop for up to six hours per day. Ability to wear a powered air-purifying respirator.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Outdoor working environment around drilling and excavating equipment.
