Job Description

The Director, Technical Accounting is a critical member of AbbVie’s Accounting Center of Excellence and manages the technical accounting team. This role serves as a key U.S. GAAP subject matter expert and works cross-functionally to support several internal stakeholders including Business Development, Commercial, R&D, Operations, Treasury, Tax, Corporate Accounting and External Reporting. Responsibilities include research, communication, and execution of accounting for significant and complex transactions as well as providing technical accounting support to AbbVie’s global affiliates. This role also manages the adoption of new accounting pronouncements, accounting policy consultations, and ad hoc accounting projects.

  • Manage the technical accounting team responsible for: Research and resolution of AbbVie’s significant, unusual and complex accounting matters including licensing and acquisitions. Providing accounting policy counsel on a global basis for significant, unusual and complex transactions across AbbVie’s functions and affiliates and preparation and implementation of purchase accounting and accounting integration workstreams for significant acquisitions.

  • Direct the accounting for collaborations, licensing agreements, asset acquisitions and business combinations, including purchase accounting, valuation of intangibles and contingent consideration liabilities.

  • Direct AbbVie’s technical accounting and accounting policy consultation process to provide timely and appropriate technical accounting support to global AbbVie stakeholders.

  • Own AbbVie’s accounting policies related to technical accounting areas, manage periodic policy updates and provide accounting policy training to the Global AbbVie Finance function.

  • Provide technical accounting expertise in other complex areas including derivatives, revenue recognition, leasing, intangible assets, inventory, restructuring, etc.

  • Monitor U.S. GAAP and SEC developments and implements adoption of new accounting and disclosure requirements.

  • Manage preparation and review of licensing and acquisition financial statement footnote disclosures for AbbVie’s public filings including Forms 10-Q and 10-K.

  • Prepare various presentations for Accounting and Financial Reporting Vice President, Corporate Controller, and Executive Leadership Team.

  • Take a leadership role in significant ad hoc projects, which vary based on AbbVie’s business transactions and priorities.

  • Coordinate with external auditors on technical accounting topics and related disclosures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Accounting.

  • CPA required and/or advanced degree a plus.

  • Experience in a complex global organization. Pharmaceutical sector experience a plus but not required.

  • 12+ years of progressive Accounting or Finance with experience in technical accounting, financial reporting and/or corporate accounting experience for a large company and/or considerable public accounting experience preferred.

  • Strong technical accounting and research skills, knowledge of SEC reporting/U.S. GAAP, and knowledge of SOX compliance.

  • Ability to work in a matrix organization, build strong partnerships and access available resources.

  • Track record of effectively leading multiple projects and balancing competing priorities.

  • Ability to develop efficient and effective solutions to diverse and complex business problems including an ability to partner with stakeholders and business partners to implement and execute business initiatives.

  • Ability to motivate and lead teams, groups of peers and other stakeholders.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to collaborate across functions.

  • Ability to distill complex, technical and/or judgmental accounting concepts into clear and concise presentations.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.​

Salary: $151,500 - $288,000
