AbbVie Analytical Research & Development (Analytical R&D) is a global analytical sciences organization responsible for all CMC analytical activities related to the development of AbbVie's pharmaceutical products. Our scope includes AbbVie's diverse pipeline of innovative small molecule and therapeutic biologic medicines and spans from the selection of Discovery candidate molecules through the transition of analytical methods and testing to commercial labs to support product launch. Within the Materials Characterization team, part of the global Analytical R&D organization, develop state-of-the-art analytical techniques for the characterization of our new chemical entity (NCE) pharmaceutical development molecules. The selected candidate would also conceive and implement novel experimental approaches to answer a broad spectrum of scientific questions as they relate to both drug substance and drug product development. These analytical techniques include: thermal analysis such as DSC and TGA, solid form analysis using XRPD and ss-NMR, spectroscopy including IR and Raman, as well as microscopy and particle size analysis. Contribute to project science within multidisciplinary teams, and develop productive collaborations, work processes and communications with other groups across drug product development disciplines. Responsibilities:

  • Perform material characterization using techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy, mechanical testing, and thermal analysis.

  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publication to communicate research findings.

  • Highly autonomous and productive in performing laboratory research or method development, requiring only minimal direction from or interaction with supervisor.

  • Formulate conclusions and design follow-on experiments based on multidisciplinary data.

  • Process, interpret, and visualize data to facilitate project team decisions.

  • May initiate new areas of investigation that are scientifically meaningful, reliable, and can be incorporated directly into a research or development program.

  • Demonstrates high proficiency across a wide range of relevant technologies.

  • Maintain a high level of productivity in the lab.

  • Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials, controlled drug and radioactive compounds, GxP compliance, and animal care where applicable.

  • Direct mentorship of others.

Qualifications

Position will be hired based on level of experience:

  • Scientist I - Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education with typically 5 years of experience, or Master’s Degree or equivalent education with typically 2 years of experience.

  • Scientist II - BS or equivalent education with typically 7 or more years of experience or MS or equivalent education with typically 5 or more years of experience.

  • Proficiency in techniques such as DSC, TGA, XRPD, FTIR, Raman, particle size analysis and microscopy.

  • Possess thorough theoretical and practical understanding of own scientific discipline.

  • Proven effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with interdisciplinary scientists and engineers.

  • High attention to detail, creativity in problem solving, strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to successfully work independently and as part of teams.

  • Excellent analytical problem-solving skills. Capable of independently developing and troubleshoot analytical methods.

  • Ability to work on multiple and simultaneous projects as part of a team in a global, fast-paced, setting where priorities may change quickly

  • Strong data and time organization/management skills coupled with strong interpersonal and effective communication skills for facilitating collaborations with a demonstrated ability to lead cross functional process development teams

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
