UL, LLC Senior Staff Engineer - MV/HV Cable Systems in Northbrook, Illinois

We are seeking a Staff/Senior Staff Engineer to join our MV/HV cable service team. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in high-voltage power cable systems, particularly in testing, inspection and certificate services. This role involves developing new services and improving existing services, providing technical leadership internally and externally, representing UL in industrial and technical committees, guiding business development based on market trends and industrial needs, and ensuring the successful implementation and execution of complex high-voltage cable projects. This role reports to the Global Product Manager and will work closely with clients, sales, and engineering teams to drive the technical development and business growth in the Engineered Materials.

  • Technical Expertise:

  • Stay current with industry trends, standards, and technological advancements.

  • Provide expert advice on MV/HV power cable systems, including testing, inspection and certification throughout the entire cable life cycle.

  • Technical insight of testing technologies for MV/HV cable systems, particularly field tests for commissioning and diagnostic tests, fault location, forensic analysis; and/or lab tests including qualification, production, and factory acceptance tests.

  • Provide advice and technical solutions based on client’s requirements and circuit configurations; analyze and troubleshoot complex technical issues related to power cable systems.

  • Project Support:

  • Conduct technical assessments and feasibility studies for high voltage cable projects.

  • Support project teams with technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Assist in the development of project plans and ensure technical alignment with project goals

  • Client Engagement:

  • Act as the primary technical contact for clients, addressing their needs and concerns effectively.

  • Conduct presentations and technical workshops for clients and stakeholders.

  • Provide recommendations and solutions that align with client objectives and project constraints.

  • Team Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with sales, engineering, and other technical teams to ensure cohesive project execution.

  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and technical staff.

  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices within the team.

  • Manage the product/service portfolio, promote product/service development globally

  • Innovation and Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and technological advancements.

  • Contribute to the development of new products/services, solutions, and methodologies.

  • Participate in research and development activities to drive innovation in TIC for MV/HV cable systems.

  • Share knowledge and best practices with team members to foster a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field. Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) is a plus.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the high voltage power cable industry, with focus on technical consulting, project leadership, and/or testing and inspection services.

  • In-depth knowledge of high voltage power cable systems, including design, installation, testing, and maintenance. Familiarity with relevant standards and regulations (e.g., AEIC/ICEA, IEC, IEEE, CIGRE, CENELEC, UL, etc.).

  • Wealth of knowledge and experiences in testing technologies or MV and HV cable systems, including lab tests (thermal aging, AC breakdown, impulse breakdown, etc.), diagnostic tests (tan delta, partial discharge, withstand, neutral corrosion, etc.), fault location, forensic analysis, etc.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, and proven leadership capabilities.

  • Good reputation in the power cable industry, including in the standard organizations and industrial committees.

The salary range for this position is $110,000-150,000 and is based upon years of experience that is commensurate with the level of the position.

All employees at UL Solutions are eligible for annual bonus compensation.  The target for this position is 20% of the base salary offered. Employees are eligible for health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental & financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country, for the relevant position level.  

We also provide employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
