Major Duties and Responsibilities:The Oak Ridge National Laboratory,more commonly known as ORNL, is the US Department of Energy’s largest multi-disciplinary laboratory. ORNL delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs to realize solutions for complex challenges including the transition to clean energy, mitigation of climate change, improvements to human health, and innovation that strengthens economic competitiveness.

The ITER Mechanical Engineering Analyst position requires an experienced engineer with a background in the analysis and design, manufacture, and assembly of complex research and development related hardware.

As the ITER Mechanical Engineer Analyst supporting ORNL, you will provide full time mechanical analytical support resources for the US ITER project office through the duration of fabrication phase of multiple systems that supports the ITER project including, the Electron Cyclotron Heating, Ion Cyclotron Heating, Pelleting Injection, Vacuum, and Port Integration Systems. Specific analysis tasks will be developed by the Analysis Manager as Final Design and Title 3 Fabrication work proceeds.

Other Duties Include:

  • Develop and alter existing FEA models.

  • Perform FEA analysis, and other calculations to evaluate and verify design concepts related to non-conformances.

  • Check analytical work of other project participants and participating as a subject matter expert in design reviews in systems, performing trade off studies of competing designs.

  • Verifying US ITER designs to ITER International Office (IO) specified requirements and criteria.

  • Advising on application of ASME and international mechanical design codes and standards and providing the detailed structural assessment of design features, support structure hardware, piping systems and handling fixtures

  • Perform various analyses, including linear/nonlinear structural analysis of various Tokamak components.

  • Formally document all analysis results; preparing technical reports and presenting findings at technical reviews as required.

  • Work with technical managers, engineers, designers, and fabrication vendors to design and analyze complex mechanical hardware associated with the USITER project Office.

  • Development of design details, preparation of design and analysis documents, preparation of technical specifications and statements of work.

  • preparation of detailed analysis reports (DACS), evaluating vendor proposals, and preparing and delivering design reviews and job status reports.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, with 5 or more years of related work experience.

  • Advanced finite element modeling using ANSYS (including APDL and Workbench interfaces) for multi-physics applications.

  • Experience with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Solid understanding of mechanical design and analysis fundamentals and their application to mechanical hardware.

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with a diverse international project team.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, with 10 or more years of specialized experience in design, fabrication and assembly of large-scale fusion energy, research related, or nuclear hardware.

  • Experience with Electromagnetic analysis and the use of ANSYS Maxell Software.

  • Experience with International codes such as Eurocode and RCC-MR.

  • This position is on-site at the ORNL in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
