Responsibilities

DUTY 1: Provides professional comprehensive age specific nursing care to Pediatric, Family Health, or Women’s Health patients with medical, surgical, mental health and gynecological conditions ranging from normal to those having complications requiring technical care and treatment. Assesses and identifies individual patient care needs and provides the type and amount of care required to meet the individual needs of each patient, making independent nursing diagnosis, providing health care instructions and /or appropriate referral to a provider or other department. Observes patient's vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, weight, etc. Executes medical orders, guiding nursing assistants, nursing students, and other medical personnel as appropriate. Obtains and screens x-ray and laboratory studies, notifying provider of abnormal results, and arranges for appropriate follow-up care as needed. Observes and records information for each patient receiving care. Alert for signs and symptoms of patient distress and provides emergency care in the absence of the provider. Coordinates with other staff members to provide safe comprehensive patient care. Complies with OSHA, AFMC and the MTF's policies and procedures on safety, patient safety, universal precautions, and infection control. Nurses are expected to provide comprehensive professional nursing cross coverage within the primary care elements to maintain consistent and continuous patient care, when needed. Will demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to teamwork to provide comprehensive professional nursing care. Clear and effective communication with colleagues across all elements is essential for managing cross-coverage duties while maintaining a focus on primary clinic responsibilities.

DUTY 2: Performs telephone and walk-in triage encounters. Uses the nursing process, approved protocols, and independent nursing judgment to systematically assess patient needs, prioritize urgency of care, provide a collaborative plan of care, (which may include wellness promotion, prevention education, advice, counseling, disease state management, and care coordination) or a referral to the appropriate level of care during telephone and walk-in encounters. Telephone triage may be centralized or decentralized. Complies with triage/telephone triage training and documentation requirements.

DUTY 3: Performs medication administration, procedures, and treatments. Uses the five rights to administer medication. Assesses patient's response to medication. Makes necessary judgments prior to the administration of medication based on knowledge of the affects of the medication on the physiological processes and current condition of the patient. Administers medication orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously, topically, etc. Maintains continual awareness of usual dosages of medications and calls unusual dosages to the attention of the provider.Nurses will propose medications to the provider in accordance with local, Defense Health Agency, procedural and Air Force Instructions. Executes approved Clinical Support Staff Protocols (CSSPs) IAW local guidance, Defense Health Agency, procedural and Air Force Instructions, providing coordinated care for high volume, low or high-risk symptoms and/or diagnoses. Uses clinical judgement and knowledge of organizationally approved CSSPs to determine when patients can be managed with a CSSP. Completes all designated CSSP training requirements as designated in the Training Plan and ensures training is documented in the training record.

Uses approved security equipment/devices to provide safekeeping and accurate accounting of controlled drugs and narcotics in accordance with Air Force Regulations, Medical Group Regulations, and Department of Nursing guidelines. Initiates emergency procedures to include initiation of life sustaining measures such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), assisting with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) measures, the Heimlich Maneuver, bleeding control, treatment of injuries, etc. in the absence of the provider. When directed by a provider performs a range of age specific nursing procedures such as wound care, urinary catheterization, nebulizer treatments, intravenous fluid administration, oxygen administration, visual acuity tests, tonometry, EKGs, irrigation of eyes and ears, etc. IAW established policies and procedures. Sets up, operates and monitors therapeutic and specialized medical equipment such as cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, and oxygen monitoring devices. Assists providers with patient examinations, therapeutic measures, and procedures. 15%

DUTY 4: Operates necessary elements of telephone, computer and data processing equipment. Assists with appointment conversion to help manage provider templates for scheduling acute, routine, established and wellness appoin1meuts on an as needed basis. Applies basic operational techniques of telephone, computer, printer, copier, and fax equipment hardware/software to perform daily tasks.

DUTY 5: Participates in-continuing education programs to update and/or maintain skills and knowledge to meet annual requirements. Participates in department's in-services/briefings, and in continuing quality improvement measures. Participates in evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of activities/services of the unit by organizing nursing monitoring and evaluation activities. Expected to participate in orientation and continuous training programs to stay proficient in various clinical areas.

DUTY 6: Provides education to patient/significant other and/or family members. Provides individualized, thorough patient education based on patient's healthcare needs. Emphasizes the preventive, curative, and restorative aspects of instructions. Follows established protocols using professional judgment to individualize instructions to meet each beneficiary's needs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement for Nurse (Emergency Room):

Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.

Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
