Job Summary: The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) is responsible for the overall management and daily operation of the support functions for the patient care unit. This includes assisting with the admission, transfer, and discharge of inpatients, emergency room patients, and outpatients. This is a casual, temporary position. Education, Training or Degree Required: (indicate preferred or required) High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred) License/Registration/Certification Required: (will be primary source verified by HR) No license, registration or certification required. Reports any health/medical errors. Observes all Environment of Care policies and reports safety risks or hazards immediately. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: (indicate preferred or required) 6+ months of related experience in a medical setting (preferred) Basic computer and keyboarding skills Knowledge of medical terminology Verbal and written communication skills Organizational skills Customer service skills Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals Ability to work independently Ability to problem solve and reach/implement reasonable solutions Ability to handle multiple tasks at a time Ability to prioritize and take direction in times of high activity and stress Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Assists with the admission, transfer and discharge of inpatients, emergency room patients, and outpatients. Operates switchboard to answer, screen, or forward calls, providing information, taking messages, or scheduling appointments. Participates in the patient admission process and appropriate chart completion. Obtains necessary signatures on admission forms, Medicare forms, etc. Verifies insurance and manages pre authorizations as appropriate Completes census sheets and communicates with Revenue Cycle regarding patient admissions. Responsible for assembling and disassembling of charts per facility standard. Accurately verifies all demographic and benefit information through previous registration, direct contact and/or language translation line. Assists with transfer paperwork as requested. Prints patient Medication Administration Records after approved by licensed staff. Functions as the after-hours receptionist/switchboard operator receiving, transferring, and taking messages. Monitors and analyzes/audits patient charts for deficient information such as medical record number, Medicare letters, and physician' or nurse's signatures. Maintains privacy and confidentiality regarding patients, staff, and all pertinent information (HIPAA). Additional duties as assigned.
