The Women's and Gender Studies Department at the State University of New York at Oneonta invites applications for a two-year lecturer in Trans Studies. We seek a feminist teacher-scholar who approaches gender from an intersectional perspective. The ideal candidate will have research and teaching expertise in one or more of the following foci: intersectional approaches to trans and gender-nonconforming identities, communities, embodiment, politics, activism, history, and/or cultural production, including, but not limited to, media, art, and performance. Women's and Gender Studies at SUNY Oneonta was founded in 1972 and is one of the oldest WGS programs in the country. The Program gained departmental status in 1992; 2019 marked the successful launch of the Women's and Gender Studies Major; and in Fall 2024, we proudly launched a new minor in Queer and Trans Studies. Our department is comprised of two full-time, core faculty members and 16 affiliates. Grounded firmly in feminist pedagogy and interdisciplinarity, our courses equip students with the critical tools to understand cultural, social, political, historical, and contemporary constructions of gender and sexuality. Our new faculty member will share core teaching responsibilities in Women's and Gender Studies, and, importantly, will support expanded offerings and growth in our new Queer and Trans Studies minor.

We center critical scholarship in Women's and Gender Studies in events throughout the year including our Gender out of Bounds lecture series, Flash Feminism scholarship sessions, and annual WGS Student Symposium. As a department committed to activism for social justice, we work to generate connections between the classroom and our communities by facilitating opportunities for internships, dialogues across difference, and outreach. In addition, the Women's and Gender Studies Department has a longstanding relationship with a number of departments and offices across campus with whom we regularly partner to create events and opportunities for scholarly and critical dialogue, community engagement, and activism. Ranked number five on Best College's "Best Colleges for LGBTQ+ Students in 2024," list, SUNY Oneonta and the surrounding community is also home to a thriving LGBTQIA2S+ community that is supported in part through campus resources like LGBTQ-friendly housing and an active Gender and Sexuality Resource Center as well as community resources such as the Otsego Pride Alliance and the Susquehanna Gender Wellness Center, one of the largest providers of trans healthcare in New York State outside of New York City.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Teaching 21 credit hours over the academic year, including core courses within the Women's and Gender Studies major in areas such as Trans Studies and Queer Studies, introductory courses in Women's and Gender Studies, General Education classes, and other courses to meet the Department's needs.

• Contributing to the growth of the department through the development of new courses in their area(s) of specialization.

• Participating in cross-disciplinary initiatives; engaging actively in student mentorship and departmental events.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD in Women's and Gender Studies, Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies, or Feminist Studies; ABD considered; completion required by date of appointment.

• One year experience teaching at the college-level in Women's and Gender Studies with evidence of teaching effectiveness in Women's and Gender Studies

• Ability to contribute to department offerings in trans, queer, gender, and critical sexuality studies

• Demonstrated commitment to intersectional approaches to gender and sexuality

Preferred:

• Expertise in Black, transnational, indigenous, and/or global or comparative geographical frameworks

• Scholarship in Trans Studies that critically engages with race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, and nation

• 2 years teaching at the college-level in Women's and Gender Studies

• Evidence of teaching effectiveness in Trans and Queer Studies

• Evidence of teaching effectiveness in Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies

• Demonstrated ability to teach core and elective courses in WGS, including, for example: Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies; Introduction to Queer Studies; Trans Lives and Constructs of Conformity; LGBTQ Communities of Color in the U.S.; Queer Migrations; Trans and Women of Color Feminisms

• Ability to develop and offer new Women's and Gender Studies courses in candidate's area of expertise

• Experience with advising and mentorship of undergraduate students

• Experience working with diverse populations and/or teaching pedagogies and/or multicultural teaching experience.
