Clearwater County CLASS SPECIFICATION
TRUCK DRIVER Class Summary/Primary Function The principal function of an employee in this class is to skillfully operate a semi-tractor and trailer safely on public highways and to ensure the safety of the general public. The Truck Driver primarily operates a 3-axle truck and trailer but may be assigned other related work in the department or maintenance. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Road & Bridge Supervisor with some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment and may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of heavy equipment and power tools and working in moving traffic areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operates heavy equipment including, but not limited to public highway tractors, trailers, loaders, trucks, backhoes, general vehicles and maintenance equipment.
Operates a variety of hand tools and power tools, including but not limited to, sledgehammers, picks, air compressors, welders, chainsaws, air hammers, jacks, and related equipment.
Hauls road material to areas that need repair and operate snowplow for snow removal in the winter.
To assist with loading and unloading procedures of tractor and trailers. To assist with other duties related to the Road & Bridge operations as assigned. Performs basic preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment and maintains
communication with service department. Adheres to policies and procedures relating to Road & Bridge Department and to protect
the safety, health, and welfare of the public. Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed
concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
Interacts with County employees and the general public effectively and professionally. Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures
and safety practices. Performs other related duties as required.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
On call after regular hours to respond to emergency situations as needed. On call during winter months for snow removal. May perform assigned tasks at mechanic shop. Performs other related duties as required
Classification Requirements Knowledge of:
Methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of truck driving, inspections of tractor and trailer, snow removal, sanding, de-icing, road sign placement, and maintenance.
Equipment and tool operation and maintenance practices. Traffic control and flagging procedures and techniques. Federal regulations and County policies regarding safe work practices relating to use of
heavy equipment, power tools, and trench and confined workplace safety.
Ability to: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, contractors, state
and local elected officials and the public. Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handling interruptions, and return to
and complete tasks in a timely manner. Develop creative and effective resolutions to simple and complex problems. Work independently and handle a variety of public interactions or situations with tact
and diplomacy. Read and adhere to all DOT regulations relating to truck operations. Read and adhere to Federal regulations and County policies regarding safe work
practices. Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures
and safety practices.
Special Qualifications
Employer prefers Class A CDL Truck Driver but requires a minimum of Clas B CDL

Communicate effectively in person and comprehend written and oral instructions. Safely operate motor vehicles, including heavy equipment, and operate a variety of
power and hand tools and adjust equipment. Perform heavy manual labor, lift and carry objects up to so lbs. and occasionally lift
and/or move objects weighing more than so lbs. with assistance. Perform essential job functions that may require bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching,
and other physical exertions in an outdoor environment, including extremes of heat and cold.
