Indian Hills Community College Dean, Arts & Sciences in Ottumwa, Iowa

Job Summary:

This position requires a passion and understanding of the community college mission and the role Indian Hills Community College plays in serving our 10-county region in southeast Iowa. The position is responsible for planning, scheduling, budgeting, reporting, supervising and evaluating the college’s Arts and Sciences curricular and co-curricular offerings, faculty, and staff. This includes collaboration with and the scheduling of academic courses from Health Sciences, Advanced Technologies, and High School programs. Provide guidance and mentorship to employees and students. Responsively resolve student, employee and course issues with understanding and empathy while navigating operational expectations and policies. Work independently in assigned tasks, appropriately delegate, and effectively make decisions that impact the department and college positively.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree (Doctorate preferred) from an accredited institution of higher education.

  • Previous successful leadership and management experience in an educational setting (5+ years)

  • Prior effective teaching experience at an educational institution (5+ years)

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.

  • Evidence of abilities to plan, organize, implement, monitor, assess and revise work effectively.

  • Verified ability to promote and support collaboration within a department and across departments.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Arts & Sciences Administration

  • Oversee day-to-day operations and supervision of the Arts & Sciences division, faculty, and staff.

  • Lead department efforts in highly effective practices related to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and program review.

  • Work collaboratively with IHCC High School programs and regional high schools to provide appropriate course offerings and scheduling that adheres to IHCC and NACEP guidelines.

  • Engage with colleges and universities to create and update articulation agreements and effectively manage transfer majors.

  • Prioritize departmental needs effectively and implement plans of action to achieve goals.

  • Collaborate with Student Services on student recruitment, guidance, placement, advising, and ongoing follow-up with prospective and enrolled students to increase recruitment and retention.

  • Manage student grievances, complaints, cases of plagiarism or other academic misconduct in collaboration with Program Directors.

  • Coordinate and/or attend faculty/staff meetings, program meetings, department meetings, college meetings, and professional development activities.

  • Manage all necessary teaching agreements, reports, contracts and other required documents.

  • Represent Arts & Sciences through service on college and state-level committees and perform all necessary tasks for successful contribution to the group(s).

Instructional Leadership

  • Coordinate and collaborate to effectively deliver institution wide academic course scheduling for Arts & Sciences, Health Sciences, Advanced Technologies, and high school concurrent enrollment offerings each academic term.

  • Facilitate ongoing curriculum development, implementation and review by supporting and collaborating with Program Directors and faculty.

  • Support faculty with effectively assessing student learning, program outcomes, transfer major metrics, and departmental and college goals.

  • Ensure syllabi and academic processes are compliant with policies and procedures.

  • Conduct regular classroom observations and provide constructive feedback to instructors.

  • Assist Program Directors and faculty with meeting students' needs through advisement and/or referral to appropriate resources.

  • Communicate professional development processes and expectations, as well as suggesting opportunities, addressing requests and completing necessary approvals for Arts & Sciences employees.

Employee Supervision

  • Support employees and students in understanding and adhering to program, departmental and college policies and procedures.

  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, supervision, and evaluation of Arts and Sciences employees.

  • Ensure new Arts and Sciences employees receive robust and thorough division level orientation and onboarding

  • Manage the IHCC performance evaluation processes within Arts & Sciences and recommend employment decisions based on evaluations and collaboration with Program Directors.

  • Oversee processes in Arts & Sciences for timesheets, payroll documents, flex schedules, QFP, and travel requests.

Financial and Resource Management

  • Work closely with the Executive Dean, Instruction, the Business Office, the Grants Office, and Program Directors related to budgets, grants, and financial processes as they relate to the Arts & Sciences division.

  • Manage the processes and systems related to facilities, equipment, textbooks, and materials to meet the needs of Arts & Sciences.

  • Guide and support Program Directors in monitoring budgets and responsible allocation and usage of funds.

  • Lead the annual capital equipment process for the Arts & Sciences division.

  • Support the marketing activities of Arts & Sciences programs.

  • Other duties as may be assigned
