The Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection is Alaska's leading agency for wildland fire suppression covering millions of acres of land.We employ seasonal single resource Emergency Firefighters (EFFs) Fire Medics to provide expert emergency medical services during fire, incident, and project operations on state and federal lands throughout Alaska. Our specialized medical program hires qualified and competent Emergency Medical Technicians at all levels and Paramedics to support initial attack and extended attack fire operations across Alaska's remote and unique landscape. Fire Medics also contribute to projects such as fuels reduction, preparedness activities, and providing medical training to other firefighting resources as needed. Our team is committed to delivering exceptional patient care and upholding the highest standards of professionalism in wildland medical operations. Deployment opportunities outside Alaska are available through the national resource ordering system, subject to certain restrictions.
Position Summary:
The single resource medic
is a critical role, deploying for assignments lasting 14 to 21 days on active wildfires, or in support of project operations.This position demands providing emergency medical care under the direction of the Medical Unit Leader (MEDL), Division Supervisor (DIVS), or Incident Commander (IC) based on specific needs and objectives. Candidates must meet arduous physical fitness requirements, including hiking and camping, to fulfill the job's demands.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide emergency medical care in active fireline and incident environments.
- Travel by various means (e.g., aircraft, helicopter, small boat, ATV-UTV, truck, hiking) to reach assignment locations.
- Lead or assist in evacuating sick or injured individuals from remote areas.
- Perform lifesaving skills with limited equipment in resource-constrained conditions.
- Serve as a team leader, directing care in critical situations.

Seasonality:
Early April to Mid/Late October (No benefits)
Compensation:
- Hourly Pay with Overtime after 40 hours
- Rates are adjusted annually based on federal compensation standards
Schedule:
Non-guaranteed; dependent on fire assignments, project work, or other needs. Deployments typically last 14-21 days plus travel time.
Requirements:
- Team-oriented with a positive outlook.
- Flexible and adaptable to changing conditions.
- Up-to-date knowledge of standards of care, including equipment use.
- Valid certifications, licenses, and qualifications, including wildland qualifications (can provide annual Red Card Refresher, or Initial Training if required)
- Professional conduct at all times.
Qualifications:
- Experience in wildland fire, military, remote medicine, or 911 EMS.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Valid Driver's License.
- National Registry and State of Alaska EMS certification.
- BLS/CPR certification
- Completion of required S-130/190, ICS 100,200, and700, and RT-130 for returnees.
- Pass the arduous WCT pack test.
