Job Summary

Battelle’s National Security Business Line is seeking a Technician Specialist to support the technical team in the execution of Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) efforts in Civil Engineering Materials and processes. This position supports the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) and is located on-site at Tyndall Air Force Base, near Panama City, FL .

The successful candidate will support efforts in existing and emerging technical areas related to U.S. Air Force Civil Engineering requirements. AFCEC conducts research and development that centers on the design, synthesis, characterization, and validation of civil engineering materials for various applications, including runway pavements, airfield damage repair, protective coatings, and firefighting chemistry. This work may involve inorganic, organic and analytical chemistry, material science, biological systems, material characterization, and additive manufacturing.

Responsibilities

• Compile technical specifications, analyze technical data, determine appropriate analysis methods, identify problems, and develop and implement solutions.

• Assists in the interpretation of results and writing of small sections of technical reports.

• Develop test plans and experimentation protocols, technology assessment studies, and conduct technical projects.

• Design, planning, and execution of experiments related to civil engineering materials that may include chemical analysis and synthesis, cementitious materials development and analysis, and similar projects.

• Uses established ability as a research technician to complete complex tasks in creative and effective ways. May participate in written and/or oral presentations to clients, suppliers, visitors and technical representatives to disseminate information. Assists in preparing in-depth reports for technical leadership.

• Works on assignments that are complex in nature where considerable judgment, creativity and initiative are required to identify the problem and provide input into a solution.

• Provides input and recommendations to technical leads and project managers on time and staff resources. Trains and guides staff members in order to complete work assignments. May act as a working leader by assigning and reviewing work of less experience staff members.

• Performs moderately complex analysis to verify the accuracy, applicability and reasonableness of project work. Identifies ways to improve process efficiency without negatively impacting client goals. Contributes to the technical planning of project work including recommending and implementing improved methods for new approaches. May provide input and justification for capital equipment purchases. Responsible for various types of equipment and oversight of facilities.

• Completes complex tasks under minimal supervision or guidance. Plans and performs project work from a basic understanding of objectives and work statements. Tracks progress against identified milestones and reports to supervisor any deviations from the plan.

Key Qualifications

• Associate degree in related field; 7 years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.

• May be expected to pursue various certifications or continuing educational units, as needed.

• Demonstrates the ability to solve complex problems.

• Exhibits technical knowledge and troubleshooting skills to complete complex assignments.

• Ability to generate and follow procedures of significant complexity.

• Demonstrates knowledge and understanding behind applications by creatively troubleshooting and correctly interpreting results. Identifies specific ways to improve work processes for completing project and non-project tasks.

• Performs complex analysis of data and provides input for reports.
