Amazon Quantum Research Scientist , Device and Architecture Theory, AWS Center for Quantum Computing in Pasadena, California

Description

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Center for Quantum Computing (CQC) is a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and technicians on a mission to develop a fault-tolerant quantum computer.

In this theory role, you will work closely with our experimental teams to support the modeling, design, and optimization of large-scale superconducting qubit processors. You will also conduct pathfinding research to guide the development of next-generation processors, focusing on device-level physics, novel qubits and gate schemes, and implementations of error correcting codes. We are looking for candidates with excellent problem-solving and communication skills who are eager to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Key job responsibilities

  • Develop theoretical and numerical models of superconducting qubit devices to support experimental efforts

  • Conduct pathfinding research on novel qubit architectures

  • Work collaboratively with teammates across the CQC, especially including working closely with experimentalists

  • Communicate scientific findings to teammates, and, when appropriate, publish findings in scientific journals

  • Stay abreast of new research developments in the field of quantum computation

About the team

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS. Within AWS UC, Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC) roles engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

Diverse Experiences

AWS values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn’t followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don’t let it stop you from applying.

Why AWS?

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. Hybrid Work

We value innovation and recognize this sometimes requires uninterrupted time to focus on a build. We also value in-person collaboration and time spent face-to-face. Our team affords employees options to work in the office every day or in a flexible, hybrid work model near one of our U.S. Amazon offices.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Pasadena, CA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, computer science or an equivalent degree in a similar field

  • A demonstrated track record of original, impactful research in quantum physics (e.g., in quantum computing, communication, or sensing; condensed matter physics; atomic, molecular, and optical physics; etc)

  • Proficiency in a scientific programming environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: superconducting qubits, cavity/circuit QED, quantum optics, open quantum systems, or superconductivity

  • Familiarity with quantum error correction (qubit codes and/or bosonic codes)

  • Experience performing numerical simulations of quantum systems

  • Experience successfully delivering on projects as part of a cross-team collaboration

  • Experience working directly with experimental data or supporting an experimental collaboration
