Job Purpose :

Provide support for process improvements, performance monitoring, root cause analysis, engineering and construction activities, and operating and maintenance functions to ensure safe and efficient plant operation.

Emphasis :

Turbine Area Specialist

(Steam Turbine Generator & Feedwater Pumps, Turbine Condenser, Turbine Control Valves & Hydraulic Controls, Air Compressors & Pumps, High Energy Piping)

Essential Functions:

  • Direct operations and maintenance to ensure plant equipment reliability, considering both technical and financial impacts on unit availability and cost control.

  • Provide technical support, testing, and inspection expertise to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation.

  • Optimize equipment operation to meet key performance indicators.

  • Develop O&M and Capital budgets, and ten-year plans for accurate projected cash flows.

  • Create strategic plans for equipment overhauls to maximize equipment life and intervals between overhauls.

  • Develop outage schedules and coordinate and perform outage inspections for all process equipment.

  • Use predictive and preventative maintenance techniques to monitor and improve equipment; analyze process variables to track key operating parameters.

  • Conduct root cause analysis of equipment problems and provide recommendations; compile equipment failure reports.

  • Develop, review, and revise station procedures, technical instructions, and documentation for equipment testing and inspections.

  • Provide engineering, design, economic justification, and specify parts and materials for projects and modifications; implement projects and process changes.

  • Conduct or procure necessary training.

  • Interface with outside engineering resources as needed.

  • Work effectively in a team environment as a leader, member, and facilitator.

  • Perform other duties and assignments as required

Turbine Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Experience with large steam turbine generators and related systems (e.g., steam-driven boiler feed pumps, extraction steam, lube oil, hydraulic control, control air, supervisory, water induction protection, gland steam, hydrogen seal oil and gas, and generator stator cooling systems).

  • Knowledge of large pumps (e.g., high volume/low head circulating water pumps, multi-stage vertical pit pumps, multi-stage high head boiler feed pumps).

  • Experience with large heat exchangers (e.g., shell and tube feedwater heaters, direct contact deaerating heaters, condensers).

  • Understanding of turbine process steam cycle, thermodynamics, and fossil steam power plant operations.

  • Expertise in maintaining large rotating equipment (e.g., bearing operation, precision alignment, vibration analysis, balancing, non-destructive examination).

  • Experience with plant air supply systems (e.g., station air, instrument air, soot blowing air).

  • Knowledge of service water systems (e.g., low/high pressure, closed cooling, potable water, circulating water).

  • Familiarity with codes and repair methods for turbines and high-energy piping (ASME, NBIC).

  • Knowledge of Non-Destructive Examinations (NDE).

  • Technical oversight on contractors during turbine outages to ensure QA/QC procedures.

  • Experience managing turbine outages (e.g., specification development, station representation, start-up and testing coordination).

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of relevant military experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of Power Plant processes, equipment, and their interrelationships.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Power Plant operations and maintenance.

  • Expertise in operation, maintenance, and control of Turbine-Generators and auxiliary systems.

  • Effective supervision, training, and direction of peers, employees, and contractors.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical information, troubleshoot, and repair systems.

  • Strong risk management and resource utilization skills.

  • Proficient in root cause analysis and technical report writing.

  • Skilled in using PC, Windows, and Microsoft Office applications, especially spreadsheets, scheduling, and equipment performance programs.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions :

  • Combination of office and industrial work.

  • Must wear PPE such as hard hats, safety glasses, goggles, face shields, hearing protection, respirators, fall protection harnesses, etc.

  • Extensive manual dexterity needed for computer use and prolonged sitting for tasks like budget preparation, work scopes, and outage schedules.

  • May perform equipment inspections involving climbing vertical ladders (over 20 feet), stairways (over 50 feet), kneeling, bending, and walking on uneven surfaces.

  • May operate mobile equipment like zoom booms or scissor lifts, involving pushing/pulling equipment, and riding in the basket.

  • Some equipment areas may exceed 130°F.

  • May prepare and conduct training, including mentoring and standing for extended periods.

  • Some domestic travel may be required.
