THE POSITION

The Department of Environmental Protection is on the lookout for a Chemist 1 to join their team in Dauphin County. This role involves engaging in professional laboratory work where the selected candidate will analyze and assess a range of substances and materials to detect environmentally significant analytes. Utilizing specialized equipment and adhering to established methodologies, the chemist will play a crucial part in ensuring the integrity of environmental assessments.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will take on the responsibility of conducting laboratory analyses and examinations of chemical substances and materials, which are essential for fulfilling key Bureau operations that fluctuate based on diverse workloads and program requirements.

The primary duties associated with this position include receiving samples, extracting relevant pollutants from different matrices, analyzing these samples through chromatography techniques, and supporting the development, modification, adaptation, or enhancement of current methodologies. Additionally, you will be tasked with performing essential maintenance on analytical instruments, ensuring adherence to laboratory safety protocols, and upholding Quality Assurance and Quality Control standards.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Overtime and/or travel may be required.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time on an ad-hoc basis. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry; or

  • A bachelor’s degree that includes 30 credits in chemistry or biochemistry.

  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.
