Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Audio Supervisor, the Audio Engineer is responsible for the implementation and coordination assistance of all audio activities, systems, equipment, and infrastructure in all Penn Live Arts venues as well as event audio for off-site PLA or PLA-supported functions.   

Primary duties of this position include but are not limited to; Participate in the operation, maintenance, inventory, and safe use of all PLA-owned audio infrastructure within allotted schedules and expense projections; Participate in the maintenance and organization of each PLA venue’s house audio system, keeping detailed documentation and console files for patch & routing, RF configuration, and playback; Assist in advancing performance-specific audio needs with touring companies and/or clients, including coordinating and securing backline or other audio rentals, interpreting or generating stage plots and/or input lists, negotiating equipment substitutions when necessary; Assist with rental equipment coordination in coordination with Audio Supervisor and Production Manager; participate in RF coordination between multiple venues with a combination of stock and rental equipment; Serve as engineer for performances and events in various capacities, A1, front of house, monitors, deck/A2, etc.; Operate a variety of digital and analog mixing consoles during events; Seamlessly integrate client, artist, or rental AV equipment with house audio systems as needed; Assist in managing PLA audio inventory in asset management system, tracking preventive maintenance, services, and warranties; Assist with the upkeep of equipment and inventory in the Donnay Recording Studio.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Install, operate, and dismantle audio equipment for performances & events as directed by the Audio Supervisor or event Production Manager.

  • Assist in coordinating audio needs for performances and events for visiting artists, clients, and internal facility users as directed by the Audio Supervisor.

  • Actively participate in the maintenance and repair of Penn Live Arts audio equipment.

  • In coordination with the Audio Supervisor and Production Management, assist in keeping up to date documentation of house audio systems, RF coordination, and console files.

  • Generate patch & input lists and stage plots as needed for visiting artists, clients, and internal facility users as directed by the Audio Supervisor.

  • Assist in the administration of event information and staffing via PLA's administrative channels including Artifax, SharePoint, Smartsheet, Asset Tiger, When To Work, and others as needed.

  • As needed, supervise the work of other audio technicians, work study students, interns, or student groups using PLA venues and/or equipment.

  • As needed, train staff & students on operating audio equipment.

  • As needed, function as a venue supervisor or technician in another department for performances, rehearsals and events.

Qualifications

  • Associates of Arts, and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Preferred bachelor's degree in Technical Theater or technical certification in Audio Production or equivalent experience.

  • Prior experience working in a technical theatre capacity is required. Candidate must have a good working knowledge of sound engineering, audio systems and industry standard sound paperwork and stage plots.

  • Knowledge of or aptitude to learn Qlab programming, Dante Networking + other audio network protocols (MADI, AES50).Candidate must have a strong work ethic and superior communication skills; must work well in a team environment, have strong customer service skills and be able to perform complex and varied tasks. Computer skills are necessary. Supervisory experience required. This position requires a flexible work schedule which includes nights and weekends and ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and use variety of tools.
