A Brief Overview This is a Full Time- 40 hour a week salaried position. It is M-F, 4-10 hour shifts. Call is rotated every 3 weeks with other supervisors. In this position the Clinical Specialist will act as a liaison to the ICU's. Will include daily rounds with ICU Medical and Nursing teams. Will also be responsible for workflow pathways and communicating back to EMU staff with updates. Rarely may need to cover surgery in the case of staff shortages- orientation will be provided. The Neurodiagnostics Clinical Specialist role encompasses clinical responsibilities along with shared administrative duties. The Neurodiagnostics Clinical Specialist at this level demonstrates expertise in caring for patients with multiple and complex problems. In addition to demonstrating clinical leadership, the Neurodiagnostics Clinical Specialist serves as a resource and consultant to staff and participates in endeavors to increase EEG/Epilepsy knowledge. Administrative duties include appropriate patient scheduling, clinical training and simulation development for all staff, participation in QI for clinical care and research.

What you will do Practice: Provides expert care using intuitive, reasoning and experience. Prepares the EEG/EMU team for the weekly admission of EMU patients. Provides consultation to other nursing/neurology/ICU team members on issues for patient management. Possesses expert patient care skills, leadership abilities and professional practice. Analyzes and applies patient satisfaction data, QI data, incident report data and other forms of feedback to improve systems of care. Responds to consultation and second opinion requests in a timely and effective manner. Maintains constant awareness of new developments, technology and research findings in areas of expertise. Benchmarks internal and external best practices to improve patient care. Develops and conducts didactic and bedside training courses for specialists and other bedside caregivers. Provides input to the Neurodiagnostics Manager for the annual evaluation of the EMU clinical supervisor. Maintains documentation of specialist orientation and annual recertification. Mentors/facilitates in the coordination of complex patient care to develop and improve their skills. Participates in selection, training and evaluation of personnel involved in EEG/EMU patient care. Assists with data collection for EEG/EMU-related research protocols as requested. Maintains department data files and provides data for research or quality improvement purposes as requested. Collects patient data for the Neuroworks database and submits data in a timely manner. Participates in research activities pertaining to EEG/EMU patients. Attends monthly EEG/EMU Administrative meetings and weekly Philadelphia Regional Epilepsy Program (PREP). Works collaboratively with other departments and disciplines o ensure that all patient care systems function effectively. Professionalism/Leadership Establishes professional practice standards. Holds self and others accountable for appearance and behaviors that promote a positive image of health care providers. Mentors other Neurodiagnostic specialists and holds each accountable regarding how to interact with parents, patients and colleagues with respect and dignity. Mentors and holds other Neurodiagnostic specialists accountable regarding how to spend the extra time with families listening for avenues to improve on the ideal patient experience and anticipate patient/family needs. Holds staff accountable for arriving at work on time and is ready to start the shift and plans for challenges and obstacles to minimize a negative impact on the patient, family and unit. Role models and mentors other health care providers on providing an accurate patient status report to care team members that reflects critical thinking skills and addresses interventions, patient outcomes and alterations to plan of care. Mentors and holds staff accountable for actively participating in patient care rounds and can make recommendations to the plan of care. Facilitates, chairs and/or participates in departmental EEG/EMU council. Participates in Shared Governance. Assists staff with development of effective systems to disseminate practice standards. Supervises clinical practice of staff through skill fairs, assessment of documentation and feedback from other departments/families. Ensures staff participates in educational and clinical development programs to meet specific requirements of patient population served. Is knowledgeable of clinical standards for Nursing/Neurodiagnostics. Promotes/contributes to practice at local, regional and national levels. Presents at regional and national conferences. Writes for publications. Maintains a presence and visibility to all staff on all shifts, Research Incorporates research into clinical practice and participates in scientific inquiry. Reads and analyzes Nursing/Neurodiagnostics and other scholarly articles and research studies, and formally disseminates information to department and at select venues (committee, grand rounds, and posters). Applies research findings to practice and select departmental committees. Initiates opportunities to participate in research studies and answers complex research questions. Learning Acts as a consultant to enhance professional development. Examines successes and failures to improve performance. Maintains a blame free environment. Develops educational opportunities in response to emerging needs and requests. Assures staff access to current clinical information. Coordinates the development, implementation, and evaluation of department policies and procedures. Maintains membership in and contributes to work of a professional organization.
