The Department of Path-Lab Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Anatomic Pathology is seeking a Tissue Coordinator to join the team:

Summary:

  • Tissue Coordinator evaluates, procures, processes, tracks and distributes human tissue biopsy samples and fine needle aspirations for molecular pathology and genomic testing under the direction of supervisor. As a member of the Molecular Anatomic Pathology (MAP) service, the coordinator works collaboratively with the oncologists and the pathologists to determine the best archival tissue for testing. Coordinates with in-network and outside hospitals to arrange for procurement of material in a short time frame. Communicate delays or issues that may impact patient treatment to key stakeholders. The ability to handle multiple tasks, triage priorities, and function in a fast- paced clinician driven environment is essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates collaboratively with physician practices to identify new patients and arrange for the acquisition of reports/blocks/slides from health system hospitals and outside organizations. Assists in the day-to-day coordination of tissue and/or report retrieval activities, electronic order entry, procurement, shipping, storage, and submission of material for review and testing. Correctly retrieves and submits the appropriate human tissue for clinical diagnosis, molecular pathology, and/or clinical trial. Processes samples in a timely fashion following specific SOP, protocol requirements, and the established workflows. Woks with UPHS pathologists to expedite the case review for tumor selection and adequacy determination and ensures that the corresponding pathology report is verified by the pathologist and is available to the ordering provider.Communicates with the appropriate UPHS network and reference sites to ensure proper follow up to obtain any necessary clarification or test order. Submits material to the labs on-time and routinely tracks the progress of the requested testing utilizing electronic and manual tools. Monitors pending requests and communicates delays and issues to the key stakeholders. Implements steps to minimize pre-analytical delays.Meets deadlines and is responsive to requests, exemplifying in his/her actions the principals of collegiality and collaboration at all times. Seeks clarity to ensure understanding, keeps work processes reasonable and simple, and balances priorities. Effectively communicates and ensures understanding of the Penn Medicine mission, vision, and values in his/her daily work.Other tasks and duties as needed to support the clinical mission of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in biological, clinical or life sciences (Required)

  • OR at least 60 semester hrs. of education to include: 24 semester hours of science course work, including six semester hrs. of chemistry, six semester hrs. of biology and twelve semester hrs. of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combinations (Required)

  • Or 2 years of experience in tissue banking or coordinating genomic testing on tumor samples in hospital or reference labs (Required)

  • Strong customer service skills (Preferred)

  • Prior experience with Laboratory Information Systems/Penn Chart (Preferred)
