Job Description

Grand Canyon University! One of Arizona’s leading institutions of higher learning. Located in the Valley of Sun in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona, GCU is a regionally accredited, private, nondenominational Christian University.

Grand Canyon University is currently seeking a Climbing Programs Coordinator. Under the general direction of the Outdoor Recreation Manager, the Climbing Programs Coordinator will assist in overseeing the Climbing Wall and Outdoor Climbing Trips that fall within the Outdoor Recreation Program. This position requires a flexible work schedule to ensure coverage of Climbing Wall and assigned trips. Must be able to flex work schedule to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Fall and Spring semesters traditional work schedule is 8:00am - 5:00pm and will be working some weekends when assigned to trips and special events.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with hiring, training, and supervision of all climbing wall student staff. This includes development of different training pieces and oversight of meetings, and discipline and counsel as needed.

  • Supervises graduate assistants, student workers and any assigned GCU staff; establishes performance goals; mentors and advises students and staff.

  • Create and maintain documents relating to the climbing wall policies and procedures.

  • Recruit, train, and develop route setters.

  • Provide monthly inspections of the climbing wall and climbing equipment. Maintain and replace old, broken, worn, equipment.

  • Ensure climbing wall area and equipment is in a clean and safe condition.

  • Enforce all climbing wall policies and procedures. Update climbing wall policies and follow industry standards.

  • Provide courteous assistance to all participants using the climbing wall.

  • Develop climbing wall schedule of activities, including classes, special events, and lead climb times.

  • Coordinate scheduling of climbing wall staff; including route setting times.

  • Responsible for following Outdoor Recreation and University safety procedures and protocols.

  • Ensure route quality (spinning holds, missing tape, broken holds, route variety, etc.) and change routes that have inconsistent moves or that may cause injury.

  • Determine which walls will be stripped and set, and the number and difficulty of routes to be set.

  • Collaborate with Club Sports department in establishing a Club Climbing Team.

  • Work with the Outdoor Recreation Manager and Marketing team to create marketing and advertising to promote the climbing wall facility and its programs.

  • Attend and participate in all meetings, workshops and retreats required by this position.

  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used and Responsibility:

  • Climb 5.11/V3 to ensure route quality.

  • Safety and risk management involved with indoor and outdoor climbing.

  • Ability to set safe, high quality routes.

  • Indoor and outdoor rock-climbing.

  • Safety Certification Testing.

  • Microsoft Office suite; software applications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Sports Management, Parks and Recreation, Business Administration or related field.

  • Must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Must be able to drive outside the State of Arizona in accordance with GCU driving requirements.

  • Must be able to pass pre-employment background investigation.

  • Must be able to work flexible schedule which includes evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Wilderness First Responder.

  • Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI)/ Climbing Wall Instructor Provider.

  • Single Pitch Instructor (SPI).

  • Leave No Trace Awareness.

  • Two Year’s Relevant Work Experience.

  • Involvement in one or more of the following professional organizations: National Intramural & National Association of Sports Association (NIRSA), Association of Recreation and Education (AORE), American Mountain Guide Associations (AMGA), Professional Climbing Instructor Association (PCIA).

  • Utilized recreation management software (e.g., Fusion).
