Caris Life Sciences Laboratory Operations Specialist - IHC (2nd & 3rd Shift) in Phoenix, Arizona

Position Summary:

The IHC Lab Ops Specialist -duties include, but are not limited to, administrative duties (i.e. documentation of temperatures), performing equipment maintenance (i.e. cover slipper, embedding station), slide duties (i.e. prep slides for staining, case building), disposing of hazardous chemicals from various instrumentations, receiving and unpacking packages, preparing bulk reagents for staining (including the use of pH meter), etc. The IHC Lab Ops supports Histology Technicians and Histology Technologists. This position works under the direction of the IHC management and follows standard laboratory procedures and policies.

The IHC Lab Ops Specialist is responsible for supporting the department with all clerical and ancillary duties in keeping all equipment ready to run for patient output.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Handles, prepares, and unloads stainers; washes slides, conducts dehydrating and cover-slipping of slides utilizing manual or automatic systems.

  • Prepares, cleans, and maintains equipment & accessories, glassware, and instruments used, daily and weekly as required.

  • Prepares bulk fluids for stainers and refills as needed, keeping track of lot numbers and associating bulks to instruments after filling them.

  • Responsible for filing, tracking, and accurate record keeping of different tasks as needed.

  • Performs case building of stained slides, audits repeat tower, responds to case priority email.

  • Times and tracks drying slides after cover-slipping and loads/unloads slides into digital scanners.

  • Performs daily waste disposal.

  • Changes reagents in dehydration line and cover slipper machine.

  • Performs cleaning cycle on Ventana Benchmark Instruments and documents it.

  • Perform QC on pH meter using standard solutions and documents it.

  • Monitors oven timers to unload slides, place them on flats and distribute to the appropriate staining platform areas.

  • May be cross-trained on other tasks like Decontamination of machines and TMA building.

  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment.

  • Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support Histology Technicians/Technologists as required.

  • Accepts other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.

  • Conditions of Employment: Individual must successfully complete pre-employment process, which includes criminal background check, drug screening and reference verification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology preferred.

  • New graduates from Histotechnology or Medical Lab Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science NCLLS accredited program preferred.

  • One year of experience in general laboratory operations is preferred. Lab experience in an academic program can be applied (submit number of hours).

Physical Demands:

  • Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.

  • Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment.

  • Must possess ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

  • Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • May have exposure to high noise levels in the data center, fumes and bio-hazardous material in the lab environment. Exposure to formaldehyde, xylene, DAB and alcohol which emit fumes. The formaldehyde, xylene, and DAB are carcinogenic.

  • Will work at a computer some of the time.

  • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents.
