About The Role:

As a Foundations (FTG) Field Technician ,you will be responsible for various construction materials testing on active construction jobsites or collection of relevant test data on future or existing projects. You will become an expert in collecting foundation samples and conducting field and/or laboratory testing on subsurface conditions. With projects ranging from complex roadway construction to single-family residential communities, you will gain the knowledge and experience necessary to take your skills to the next level.

Responsibilities:

  • Travel safely to various job sites in a company provided vehicle; maintain company vehicle (schedule oil changes, inside/outside upkeep and complete monthly vehicle inspection reports)

  • Collect samples and conduct routine field and/or laboratory testing on subsurface conditions for foundations, roadways and other surfaces using field equipment

  • Review blueprints and perform field work such as construction layout for foundations footings

  • Conduct Residential Subgrade Verifications – evaluation of the bearing capacity of soils within an excavated footing to verify the soils are suitable to support the recommended, allowable design bearing pressure, usually prior to foundations being poured

  • Complete Residential Slab Compaction Evaluations – evaluation of the compaction of materials placed within slab areas, usually prior to slabs being poured

  • Conduct Residential Preliminary Subsurface Evaluations – testing performed to get a general idea of the soil bearing capacity within the top five feet below the existing ground surface prior to foundation excavation

  • Complete Registered Design Professional (RDF) Inspections – evaluation of the construction of foundations or slabs in accordance with approved construction documents provided by the builders. This is performed prior to pouring the foundation or slab, which could eliminate the need for a footing inspection before concrete is poured

  • Perform Deep Foundation Layouts – provide engineered layouts for alternative foundation types if soil conditions are not deemed suitable to support a typical shallow foundation including: timber pile, drilled caisson and helical pier supported foundations

  • Observe, document and complete accurate and detailed daily field activity and/or diagrams daily

  • Report all findings to clients and supervisors

  • Communicate verbally and electronically daily with various field personnel and colleagues

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Must be at least 18 years old for entry onto job sites

  • Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record

  • Outdoor work experience

  • Heavy lifting/manual labor experience

  • Ability to read, write and use technology including phone and computer

  • Preferred: blueprint reading experience and/or foundation/slab inspection experience

  • Preferred: prior experience as field/engineering technician, construction materials testing or related experience

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Days and hours for this position are typically Monday-Friday with some weekends, holidays and overtime as needed

  • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments

  • Field work on outside construction sites involving long-term standing, sitting and repetitive motions

  • Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit)

  • You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day within the Mid-Atlantic region

  • Some weekend, overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required

  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move/shake up to 40lbs. (soil and/or concrete tests and related apparatus); frequently lift and/or move up to 60lbs. (soil and sand samples, and nuclear density equipment); and occasionally move more than 100lbs. (such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete samples)
