University of Pittsburgh Laboratory Research Technician in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Laboratory Research Technician

The University of Pittsburgh's Renal-Electrolyte Division is seeking a Laboratory Technician II position.

Minerals, such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium play a key role in maintaining health of the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system. Our research group is actively exploring the effects of mineral imbalance upon blood pressure and bone health and how it is that kidneys regulate daily mineral balance in times of stress, such as during nutritional deficiency or during pregnancy and lactation. We seek a research technician who will be trained to perform the following supervised experimentation and analyses: animal handling (mainly mice), feeding, breeding, genotyping, surgeries, blood pressure measurement, and basic electrophysiology studies. Working with clinical and tissue samples, this technician will perform protein and metabolite measurements using western blot, ELISA, and mass spectrometry. This technician will order necessary laboratory materials, prepare laboratory reagents and will have a key role in cataloging animal activities. Laboratory experimental procedures can be taught, but essential qualities for this position include ability to follow established protocols precisely; an accurate, thorough approach to record keeping; an ability to keep a tidy, organized workspace; and an ability to work well with other research staff.
