    Position Summary

The Peer Specialist helps to engage Young Adults in their own recovery by sharing his/her own mental health history as well as any past involvement with child welfare or the justice system. By sharing his/her own recovery story, the Peer Specialist provides modeling of recovery, helps to engage the Young Adult in treatment services, and also helps to advocate from a recovery-oriented standpoint.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist youth in personal goals for recovery.

  • Assist youth in determining their treatment goals/objectives.

  • Teach and support skills needed to facilitate individual recovery.

  • Promote the knowledge of available service options and choices.

  • Observe the progress youth make toward meeting objectives.

  • Serve as a mentor/role model demonstrating competency in recovery, effective coping skills and self-help strategies.

  • Develop and conduct Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) individual and group education.

  • Assist with teaching independent living skills such as accessing public transportation options, cooking, cleaning, etc.

  • Accompany and support youth enrolled in social/leisure, educational, occupational, and/or advocacy- based community integration activities.

  • Document activities in electronic health record.

    Qualifications

  • Clearances. State Police; FBI clearance; child abuse clearance; CPSL Mandated Reporter-Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse training; any additional background checks/clearances required by state governing bodies.

  • Valid driver’s license and current vehicle insurance.

    Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands. Requires vision, speech, and hearing. Position allows employee to move about freely or sit at will when performing job duties.

  • Environmental Factors. Office, home, community

  • Working Hours. Non-traditional hours as determined by the program, including some evening hours and occasional weekends.

Required

  • High School or better

Experience

Required

  • Within the last 3 years has maintained at least 12 months of successful full or part time paid or voluntary work experience OR obtained at least 24 credit hours of post-secondary education.

  • Young adult who is or has a lived experience as a recipient of mental health services and is willing to disclose his/her peer status to team members and consumers.

Preferred

  • Peer Support Certification
