University of Pittsburgh Research Technician in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Research Technician

The research technologist with the biology or medical technology background (at least Bachelor's degree) will be working with cultured immune cells or cancer cells and their products. Duties include receiving and logging incoming specimens, banking cells, and performing assays and procedures that measure functions of these cells. Working under supervision, the applicant must have the ability to set up and perform biochemical and enzymatic assays according to the available laboratory protocols. The applicant must be capable of following the protocols and use simple instruments necessary for results acquisition such as, e.g., a colorimeter. Various measurements with immune cells or nanovesicles produced by these cells (e.g., ability to proliferate or produce cytokines) will be measured, and results reported to the supervisor Proficiency with tissue culture, cell counts, cell viability measurements, and isolation methods for cells ( e.g., centrifugation, enrichment) are necessary. Isolation of cells is to be performed using culture supernatants and/or human or animal blood samples. The ability to examine cells under the light microscope is necessary. Duties also involve preparation of culture media, keeping records of all experiments, aliquoting cells or vesicles into well of culture plates with micropipettes, and vialing of cells for cryopreservation.

Job Summary

 

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.

 

Essential Functions

Perform on bench experiments with nanovesicles which require isolation from supernatants of cell lines or human/animal plasma and characterization of the vesicles.

Physical Effort

Moderate physical effort required. May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment.
