General Responsibilities:

This is an exciting opportunity to lead archaeological teams in performing Phase I surveys, Phase II testing, and Phase III data recovery excavations on pre-contact and/or historic period archaeological sites in the Mid-Atlantic and Eastern Midwest regions. Our projects include highway and utility corridors, bridge replacements, municipal water and sewer lines, commercial projects, and private developments. Field crews work five to ten-day shifts, in a wide variety of environments (mountain forest, agricultural fields, subdivisions, and urban centers), with paid lodging and per diem. Essential Roles and Responsibilities: Lead teams performing field work at Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and/or Phase III data recovery levels. Perform laboratory tasks such as sorting, washing, identifying, and labeling artifacts. Prepare accurate field and laboratory documentation and mapping. Complete time and expense reports using online applications. Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management. Must obey all company safety procedures. Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects. This is a full-time, benefitted position based out of our Pittsburgh office.

  • Supervises crews of Archaeological Technicians during field projects.

  • Maintains field equipment and supplies.

  • Ensures the field crew is following project-specific requirements for data collection.

  • Conducts background research when requested by the Principal Investigator.

  • Writes simple technical reports under the supervision of more senior staff and may assist with portions of proposals.

  • Assists Archaeologist Principal Investigator with finding the necessary field personnel for specific projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or a closely related field (Master’s degree preferred).

  • A minimum of three (3) years of previous professional archeological experience.

  • A minimum of six (6) months of previous experience as a Field Director in Pennsylvania or adjacent states/regions.

  • Working knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

  • Previous experience with and understanding of curation procedures and requirements according to standards within Pennsylvania and/or surrounding region(s).

  • Experience with GIS and digital recording tools and platforms for use in the field.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely using both written and verbal skills.

  • Experience writing technical reports that meet and exceed regulatory requirements and standards, such as Departments of Transportation, US Army Corps of Engineers, State SHPO, etc. is preferred.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, and walking on uneven surfaces carrying at least 20 lbs. of equipment, and work in extreme (heat/cold) weather conditions.

  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship.

  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening.

Preferred Certification:

  • Registered Archaeologist (RA)
