Overall Purpose:

Under general supervision, the Senior Accountant provides management with financial information by researching and analyzing accounts and preparing monthly financial statements. This position is responsible for monthly accounting close for the regulated business and certain non-regulated entities. Ensures compliance with Finance department policies and procedures, evaluating internal controls and assisting with the accounting close and related reporting functions. Provides assistance to Senior Accounting positions on matters including regulatory and non-regulatory financial close, reconciliations of balance sheet accounts and other special projects including revenue analysis, surveys and others as they arise.

Location: Hybrid (see below), downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for monthly accounting close, which includes preparing general ledger entries, analyzing and resolving discrepancies, making adjustments to ledger entries based on professional standards and internal policies and procedures and performing all other duties as assigned. Assist the Accounting team with monthly financial close, including preparation and analysis for monthly close meetings. Assist with reporting within the accounting close schedule as well as external survey requests as needed. Facilitate and complete assigned monthly closing procedures. Stay current on accounting and regulatory trends and apply to work.

2. Responsible for ensuring compliance with all Finance policies and procedures that are applicable to the position. Responsible for the annual update of Finance policies and procedures and related desk manuals.

3. Perform ad hoc detailed analysis of accounts as directed, including investigating and determining reasons for variances – both to budget and prior year.

4. Assist with special projects on an as needed basis, including external government surveys, new system implementations and employee benefit plan reporting.

5. Have knowledge and ability to perform functions of other essential management positions in the Controller’s Unit, in order to complete duties to ensure adequate coverage of departmental responsibilities.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or relevant discipline required.

  • Three or more(3+) years of Corporate Accounting or Month-End Accounting Close Experience required.

  • CPA certificate or equivalent preferred.

Skills/Abilities Utilized in this Role Include:

  • Proficient with accounting software (Solomon and/or Netsuite preferred) and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Solid written and verbal communication skills, ability to pay attention to detail and maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to problem-solve.

  • Organized and able to prioritize.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to working with others.

Scope

Primary focus is on daily deliverables, outputs and reporting. Typically accountable for managing one's own time and workflow. Responsible for using prescribed guidelines to analyze situations and solve problems. Work activities are typically moderate to complex in nature requiring the incumbent to draw on previous knowledge to perform role. Continues to build knowledge base but has a solid foundation to act independently the majority of the time. Still draws on experts and managers when needed but less frequently.

Problems and issues faced are vague. Draws on past experience on a regular basis. Accountable for direct level of reasoning and decision making.

Hybrid Work

Position follows our hybrid work model, with a minimum of two days working in the office and the remaining days working remotely. Reporting location and frequency may be subject to change based on job role and department needs.

Storm Roles
