Northrop Grumman is currently seeking an Electrical Control Systems Engineer/PLC Programmer to join a team responsible for International Programs with the Defense Sector team in Plymouth, MN.

This position will provide Control Systems Engineering and PLC Programming expertise in the manufacturing of advanced medium caliber ammunition for international pursuits. The person filling this position must be experienced with control system hardware and software. The successful candidate must have the demonstrated capability to work independently with a wide variety of multi-disciplined team members in remote settings while building strong working relationships. The candidate shall also apply strong engineering fundamentals, demonstrate clear communication with those they interact with, and must be able to support up to 50% domestic and international travel for the duration of the program.

Please note this position may be filled as Electrical Control Systems Engineer/PLC Programmer (level 2), or Principal Electrical Control Systems Engineer/PLC Programmer (level 3) depending on the candidate’s education and/or years of experience.

Primary job responsibilities:

  • Coordination of efforts to modernize industrial control systems and hardware. Working with process experts to create automation specifications and develop implementation resources to meet program/process requirements.

  • Specify, document, design, test, and maintain data acquisition and control systems using PLC-based technology.

  • Create and read logic and flow diagrams for program design, programming, simulation, and testing.

  • Develop Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for control and acquisition systems.

  • Selection and sizing of instrumentation (pressure, temperature, strain, flow, etc.).

  • Update and develop Instrument & Controls documents such as: IO lists, instrument lists, wiring schematics, loop diagrams, Electrical Instrument & Controls specifications.

  • Coordinating the design & documentation of safe & affordable manufacturing processes with Project Engineering, Tooling, Quality, Facility & Production personnel.

  • Establish monitoring for Key Process Parameters using Statistical Process Control.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement in existing processes, conducting trials & verifications for improvements through a robust change process, and implementing verified changes.

  • Non-Conformance investigation to determine Root cause & Corrective Action for Process related non-conformances.

  • Defining requirements for new/repaired facilities equipment used in the manufacturing of ammunition products.

  • Assist in developing the scope of work and related estimates for proposal activity.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Qualifications for Electrical Control Systems Engineer/PLC Programmer

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM plus 2 years of experience; OR a master’s degree in STEM plus 0 of experience.

  • Qualifications for Principal Electrical Control Systems Engineer/PLC Programmer

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM plus 5 years of experience; OR a master’s degree in STEM plus 3 years of experience

  • Experience with designing and programming process automation and industrial controls.

  • Experience with communications, data networks and data collection.

  • Able to travel up to 50% of the time both domestic and international in hands on environments.

Desired Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following

  • Experience implementing controls solutions and programing HMIs.

  • Experience with digital/analog control and measurement.

  • Experience with standard communications protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Profinet, CANBUS, etc.)

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to interface with an organization at all levels.

  • Skilled in working with Microsoft Office.

  • Knowledge of IEC 61131-3

  • Past experience in an environment containing energetic and/or explosive materials.

  • Past experience successfully working with highly diverse teams and with foreign cultures.

Salary Range: $83,300 - $124,900

Salary Range 2: $105,400 - $158,000

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
