Description
The Senior Consultant Transmission Planning will utilize extensive knowledge in electrical transmission planning and application of grid technologies to assess grid performance and ready the grid for the future challenges represented by plant retirements and renewable integration. The Senior Consultant Transmission Planning will lead a broad range of transmission and operational studies and other consulting services to help clients make decisions backed by business and engineering analysis. The senior consultant will directly engage with clients to establish study objectives, formulate project approaches, and lead a team of consultants/engineers to meet the study objectives and provide the client with valuable and actionable deliverables.
Leads the execution of a broad range of studies and other consulting services such as transmission planning and operational studies consisting of power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit, voltage analysis, harmonics analysis, electromagnetic, reliability, and economic dispatch associated with congestion management scenarios.
Oversees evaluations by ensuring NERC, FERC, and regional requirements, policies and procedures; production costing; risk assessment techniques; TPL compliance; generator interconnection are applied.
Ensures utility industry software such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod is utilized accurately to ensure client deliverables are met.
Leads a team of engineers to independently execute transmission system planning studies.
Oversees the evaluation process for selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques for electric transmission system planning procedures and criteria.
Reviews and approves data analysis and interpretation of engineering, financial, and economic conditions and results, and subsequent business implications to client projects.
Ensures the analysis of life-cycle costs is completed accurately by reviewing the technical assumptions regarding capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, performance estimates, and economic assumptions and forecasts conducted by consultants and analysts.
Reviews technical and business-related risk assessments that evaluate impacts associated with rules implemented by regulatory agencies.
Reviews financial analysis completed by consultants and analysts using a variety of computer-based software.
Reviews technical reports and presentations summarizing results of analysis before providing final version to clients.
Oversees execution of client presentations, engineering reviews, financial analysis, and contract administration for the design/planning of utility systems.
Prepare and present project budgets and cost estimates—report project performance.
Responsible for effective communication with other disciplines.
Support business lines as required by clients.
Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff.
Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.
Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program or related degree and 7 years of experience within related industry, specifically with several years of experience within power delivery planning.
Master's degree in engineering or business and 6 years of experience or PhD in Engineering or Business and 5 years of experience
Prior experience associated with electric utility operations, planning, or consulting.
Extensive experience with power system planning and operations; transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis; NERC, FERC, and regional requirements, policies and procedures; production costing; risk assessment techniques; TPL compliance; generator interconnection; and harmonics analysis.
Extensive experience electric transmission systems and transmission systems planning processes.
Strong computer skills using industry software such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod.
Ability to independently execute various transmission system planning studies.
Extensive knowledge of numerous power regions of the country and independent system operators such as: PJM, MISO, NEISO, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, ERCOT, NYISO
Extensive knowledge of NERC and FERC standards
Ability to provide independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques for electric transmission system planning procedures and criteria.
Extensive knowledge in standard engineering, construction, and operation techniques, principles, and procedures associated with power transmission facilities.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Proven ability to lead, educate, and train a team of engineers and analysts in regard to transmission planning studies.
Ability to independently solve difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Ability to perform under pressure and tight deadlines and to be effective in on-site work environments.
Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met.
Ability to focus on the big picture to effectively and efficiently provide services that meet client needs, while also having the ability to identify and analyze details that are critical to project outcomes.
Willingness to learn new service offerings as client needs and the market requires changes to the service offerings provided by our group
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT).
Ability to travel.
Professional Engineer (PE) License Preferred.
