Job Overview

The Vice President Commercial is responsible for leading the Commercial Construction Group including Preconstruction, Project Management, Select Projects, and Field Supervision. This includes collaborating with the President, business line leaders, department heads, and outside consultants in the delivery and execution of all commercial project initiatives to achieve “best of class” performance consistent with strategic and business plan goals of Wright-Ryan Construction.

Job Requirements

  • Develops and executes strategic initiatives and long-term business development plans for all commercial business lines including new, emerging, and target markets, products, services, and specific geographies that achieve organizational revenue and profit goals and build durable competitive advantages.

  • Consistent with strategic growth goals, establishes short-term (1 year) and long-term (5 year) business plans for revenue, profit, and backlog, including budgets and forecasts, for commercial business lines at the beginning of each year with timely re-forecasts throughout the year as needed to ensure the Commercial Projects Group meets or exceeds their financial targets.

  • Provides strategic client and market management with a focus on enhancing key client relationships, increasing pursuit success rate, strategic sales, and client development.

  • Develops and executes a professional development plan for the Commercial Construction Group with a focus on leadership development and succession planning to ensure a strong talent pipeline for key roles.

  • Leads, develops, hires, and assesses diverse teams of employees working at geographically remote locations to enhance employee engagement and achieve organizational goals.

  • Actively engages in ongoing education and pursuit of the latest trends and methods in commercial construction and implement new initiatives, systems, and process improvements within the group.

  • Effectively manages project risks including cost, schedule, and quality, balanced appropriately with the organization’s reputation and customer relationships.

  • Maintains and enhances a culture of trust, integrity, accountability, diligence, and deep engagement while promoting and modeling sustainable work/life balance for all team members.

  • Works with President and others to ensure the organization is contributing to the vitality of the communities we work and live in, including playing an active individual role in supporting community and industry enterprises.

Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in commercial construction with a combination of operations and project management work experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of construction means and methods, financials, contracts, and financial risk management and development markets with knowledge of various strategic partners involved in project development: architects, developers, potential owners, et al.

  • Demonstrated business development, marketing, and negotiation skills with proven success in developing and executing strategic initiatives.

  • Ability to take calculated risks in pursuit of organizational goals.

  • Ability to oversee, support, motivate, and effectively delegate to employees in the management of construction risks and issues that could impact profitability to provide an accurate assessment of each project’s financial status.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills to lead and manage complex projects from start to finish with excellent attention to detail.

  • Ability to work in a team environment effectively communicating goals and fostering collaboration in the achievement of organizational objectives.

  • Proficiency with computer software applications including general office application; scheduling software and demonstrated ability to promote technology use and proficiency by Commercial division staff.

  • Full knowledge of both OSHA guidelines and WR Safety policies and procedures, ensuring conformance on all projects.
