General Purpose

Analyze market conditions, develop and communicate strategies to lower Net Power Costs including; negotiate sales and purchases of wholesale power, transmission and financial instruments, consistent with the strategic direction of the Company. Manages bids and monitors performance for resources participating in the Energy Imbalance Market, or any other formal independent system operator or regional transmission organization.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Associate Energy Transaction Trader include the following:

  • Sell or purchase energy, to balance current system load and resource requirements and to reduce Net Power Costs.

  • Collaborate with Energy Supply Management personnel to develop strategies to optimize available generation assets such as thermal, hydro and wind to reduce Net Power Costs.

  • Manage bid submissions for resources participating in Energy Imbalance Market, or any other formal independent system operator or regional transmission organization.

  • Monitor the dispatch of the Company’s generating assets on an hourly basis, including use of limited resources and renewable resources to reduce Net Power Costs.

  • Manage data interface with Energy Imbalance Market, or any other formal independent system operator or regional transmission organization.

In addition to the above, the responsibilities of the Mid-Level Energy Transaction Trader include the following:

  • Provide post-operational analysis to improve performance.

  • Interpret and validate moderately complex model outputs.

  • Provide direction to associate-level traders.

In addition to all the above, the responsibilities of the Senior Energy Transaction Trader include the following:

  • Function as a subject matter expert and evaluate the performance of essential tools, troubleshoot performance issues and collaborate on improvements.

  • Provide direction to associate and career level traders and author and maintain business unit operating procedures.

  • Develop short term trading strategies to increase corporate margin through optimization of the Company's portfolio of generating assets.

Requirements

Requirements of the Associate Energy Transaction Trader:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.

  • Ability to analyze market conditions and to identify opportunities and strategies to reduce Net Power Costs and effectively communicate to Energy Supply Management personnel.

  • Ability to problem solve and obtain results within time constraints

  • Ability to provide clear documentation for the purpose of root cause analysis

  • Ability to identify, negotiate, and close on sales and purchase opportunities.

  • Communication and interpersonal skills to develop collaborative relationships with internal and external personnel

  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and tools used to perform essential duties

  • Understanding of financial modeling, risk assessment, commodity management, electricity and natural gas trading practices.

  • Position work hours are non-standard

In addition to the above, the requirements of the Mid-Level Energy Transaction Trader include the following:

  • A minimum of two to three years’ experience in trading, or one years’ experience in electric utility operations and the applicable NERC certification.

  • The mastery of concepts affecting job performance for the purpose of coaching Associate Transaction Traders

In addition to the above, the requirements for the Senior Energy Transaction Trader include the following:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in energy trading.

  • Analysis skills in order to understand market conditions and to identify sales/purchase opportunities.

  • Ability to maintain, configure and develop the tools and displays utilized in performing the function of the PacifiCorp trading and scheduling desks.

Preferences

  • Prior experience in energy trading, scheduling or utility resource management.

  • Analysis skills in order to understand market conditions and to identify sales/purchase opportunities

  • Advanced degree or certification.

  • Data Base proficiency.

  • Visual Basic Proficiency.

  • Advanced knowledge of non-standard over-the-counter options/financial products.

  • Experience in organized ISO/RTO/EIM markets.

  • Experience pricing Congestion Revenue Rights

  • Advanced degree or certification.

This position is eligible for an annual discretionary performance incentive bonus of up to 20.00% of salary.
