The Position

J ob Appointment: This is a seasonal Community Service Aide (CSA) II position with a maximum of 1,400 hours in a calendar year, which averages to 26 hours per week.

Typical Schedule:

  • School Year (October - May):

  • Approximately 20 – 25 hours a week

  • Between the hours of 8am – 4pm

  • Tuesday – Saturday (Teen Nature Team meets most Saturdays)

  • Primarily office based

  • Summer (June – September):

  • Approximately 26 – 35 hours per week

  • Between the hours of 8am – 4pm

  • Monday – Friday

  • Primarily field based

    Work Location:

  • In-person nature education programs can take place at any park or natural area.

  • Program planning and evaluation takes place at the Environmental Education office at 6433 NE Tillamook Street, Portland, OR 97213.

Position Summary:

The City of Portland is seeking a dedicated Nature Educator to join our Teen Nature Team. In this role, you will deliver engaging, hands-on nature-based activities for youth ages 11-14, fostering a love for the outdoors and environmental stewardship. As a Nature Educator, you will develop lesson plans, provide mentorship, and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all participants. This position requires strong communication skills, a passion for nature education, and the ability to connect with diverse youth and their families.

What you'll get to do:

  • Deliver hands-on nature-based activities that inspire and educate youth aged 11-14.

  • Develop and edit lesson plans in alignment with the program curriculum to enhance learning experiences.

  • Provide mentorship in professionalism and leadership skills, helping youth build confidence and competence.

  • Evaluate participants’ progress, offer constructive feedback, and maintain high expectations for all involved.

  • Ensure the safety of youth by identifying safety hazards and adhering to safety standards.

  • Practice patience and effective behavior management skills to create a positive group dynamic.

  • Manage program supplies by moving, loading, cleaning, and conducting inventory on a daily and weekly basis.

  • Conduct programming at various locations across Portland and beyond, including the Oregon Coast and Columbia River Gorge.

  • Participate in program outreach efforts, including tabling at community events and making presentations in schools.

  • Create and edit program materials to enhance the educational experience.

  • Perform administrative tasks, including filling out reports and evaluations to track progress and outcomes.

  • Connect with community partners to provide diverse experiences focused on environmental education.

  • Maintain regular communication with youth participants and their families to foster engagement and support.

  • Grow your skills through shadowing opportunities, workshops, trainings, and skill-sharing sessions.

  • Collaborate with fellow educators to cultivate a positive work culture and streamline organizational processes.

  • Drive and transport participants in a 14-passenger bus, ensuring their safety and well-being during outings.

To Qualify

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

  • Experience planning and leading activities for groups, particularly with youth aged 11-14.

  • Experience working with groups of youth, creating an engaging and supportive learning environment.

  • Ability to apply the principles and practices of environmental and/or outdoor education.

  • Ability to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion while providing culturally responsive leadership to all participants.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams, for administrative tasks and communication.

    Applicants must also possess:

  • Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification within 6 months of hire.

  • Ability to drive a 14-passenger van.

Although not required, you may:
