Responsibilities

The Spanish Sign Language Interpreter will provide interpretation within the State of Oregon. Interpretation will consist of but not limited to Education, legal, Medical, Environmental, and Social Services, etc. This position performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Cayuse.

Job Responsibilities

  • Accurately interpreting spoken work situations like lectures, conversations, and meetings

  • Translating Spanish Sign Language to English

  • Working with an organization’s faculty to better facilitate communication with deaf members of the community.

  • Collaborating with other ASL Interpreters

  • Utilizing technology to transcribe spoken English in some settings.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Job Skills and Qualifications:

  • High School Degree or BA Degree or equivalent in years of experience

  • 5+ years of experience with sign languages in Spanish from different parts of Latin America and Spain.

  • Registry of Interpretation for Deaf (RID), Board of evaluation of Interpretation certification program (BEI), World Association of Sign Language Interpreters.

  • Demonstrated experience in providing auxiliary aids and services to facilitate effective communication for people with disabilities, including people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind.

  • Experience in Language Liaison, Education, Medical, Environmental, or Military Interpretation

  • Must be comfortable interpreting for these organizations: National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI), Department of Social services (DSHS), Certified Health Interpretation (CHI), Federal courts, Legal, economic and World Bank.

  • Assigned interpreters are certified or qualified by any of the following bodies: Oregon Court Certification program; Oregon Health Authority; Oregon Health Care Interpreter Program.

  • Assigned interpreters have experience interpreting for Metro or other jurisdictions in Oregon.

  • Experience in specialized vocabularies (i.e., legal, performing arts, cultural, or other specialized vocabulary used in land use and transportation planning).

  • Must be fluent in one or more of the following languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Hmong, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Lao, Nepali, Persian, Romanian, Somali, Tagalog, Telugu, Thai, or Ukrainian.

  • Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

Minimum Skills:

  • The ability to facilitate communication with discretion and impartiality.

  • Proficiency in oral and written communication

  • A wide breadth of knowledge in a variety of topics

  • Strong social awareness for interpretation with empathy and attentiveness

  • Understanding of the cultural norms and conventions of the American Deaf Community

  • The ability to track and remember information and concepts while simultaneously interpreting them.

  • Physical stamina and dexterity for extended interpretation sessions

  • Must possess problem-solving skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft and Adobe toolsets, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Acrobat, etc.

  • Highly motivated with the ability to handle and manage multiple tasks at any one time.

  • Ability to forge new relationships, individual and teaming in nature.

  • Must be a Self-starter, that can work independently and as part of a team.

Reports to: Deputy Program Manager

Working Conditions

  • Professional office environment.

  • On-call as needed

  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties while standing for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.

  • Must be able to establish a productive and professional workspace.

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time looking at computer screen.

  • May be asked to work a flexible schedule which may include holidays.

  • May be asked to travel for business or professional development purposes.

  • May be asked to work hours outside of normal business hours.

Pay Range

USD $45.00 - USD $65.00 /Hr.
