Universal Health Services Lead Residential Counselor in PORTSMOUTH, Virginia

Responsibilities

Harbor Point Behavioral Health Center offers hope and healing for youth ages 7 to 17 at the time of admission with several psychiatric diagnoses and/or developmental disabilities. Located in Portsmouth, VA, Harbor Point provides intensive, residential treatment to youth in a comfortable setting that is conducive to healing. Our facility specializes in treating children and adolescents with depression, bipolar, ADHD, and other mental health issues. We also have specific treatment programs for those with intellectual disabilities or those with self-injurious behavior. Harbor Point and its programs are fully accredited by The Joint Commission and the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities. We are licensed by The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and the Virginia Department of Education. We are a TRICARE®-approved and certified facility.

Position Scope:

Serves as a role model for residents to observe and learn socially effective values, attitudes and behaviors. Ensures environment remains safe and normative culture remains positive throughout facility. Contributes to formulation, implementation and revision of the resident individual treatment plan.

Essential Functions:

  • Implements program to help residents learn acceptable behaviors.

  • Supervises residents’ attainment of treatment goals.

  • Maintains positive normative culture.

  • Utilizes established mechanisms to enhance communication.

  • Assist in staffing needs of the facility.

  • Adheres to all supervision responsibilities related to monitoring.

  • Assist with the supervision and accountability of subordinates.

  • Ensures the coordination and completion of all documentation related to resident care.

    Qualifications

    Must possess demonstrated leadership ability, the ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and individuals, strong oral and written communication skills. Must possess knowledge of therapeutic relationships as relates to adolescents, therapeutic processes, adolescent growth and development, limit setting and behavior management, and crisis management of aggressive behavior. An individual must be able to perform each essential function of the job satisfactorily.     Education/Experience : Must possess either a baccalaureate degree in social work or psychology and two years of professional experience working with children (one year of which must have been in a residential facility for children) OR a high school diploma or a General Education Development Certificate (G.E.D.) and a minimum of five years working with children with at least two years in a residential facility for children; or a combination of education and experience working with children as approved by the department.
