JOB TITLE: Histology Technician
DEPARTMENT: Pathology Laboratory
STATUS: Full-time, Non-exempt REPORTS TO: Laboratory Manager
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Histology Technician functions under the supervision and guidance of the Laboratory Manager and participates in the multidisciplinary process of delivering diagnostic information to providers and offers ethical expertise to the professional medical staff. The Histology Technician is responsible for functioning within the scope of practice regulated by State and National government as well as various accrediting agencies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination by Pathologist.
Accessioning, grossing and embedding specimens received.
Able to perform routine Hematoxylin and Eosin and simple special stains.
Operates and maintains computerized laboratory equipment.
Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements and controls are positive.
Documents laboratory quality assurance and daily quality control.
Performs and documents all quality controls with corrective actions.
Answer phone and communicates with providers and staff of complex data.
Disposes and documents the use of hazardous waste appropriately.
Organizes laboratory area including general cleaning, upkeep and filing of blocks and slides.
Follow all safety inspections and ensures laboratory safety standard adherence.
Other duties as assigned by Laboratory Manager/Laboratory Director.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
· Histologic Technician, H.T. (ASCP)
· 1 to 3 years of experience in laboratory or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Must have a current NYS license
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Comprehensive knowledge of all histology functions
Familiar with microtome and other related equipment
Familiar with special staining techniques
Use of laboratory computer system and EMR
Must demonstrate a sense of urgency and function well under demanding conditions.
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills with patients, staff, and other health care professionals
