PRICE MUNICIPAL CORP Equipment Operator I in PRICE, Utah

Job purpose

 

Performs a variety of full performance level skilled work in the operation and maintenance of heavy mechanized equipment.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

Operates loaders, skid steers, trucks such as snowplows/sanders/dump trucks, motor graders, backhoes, laydown machine and sweepers in the maintenance and construction of City streets, roadways, bridges, culverts, and flood channels as an individual contributor in a semi-skilled manner. Opportunities to learn to operate other heavy equipment the City owns will be provided by the Street Supervisor or the Senior Equipment Operator if it is determined the need is present.

 

Checks and services assigned equipment; performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs; reports mechanical problems to the shop for repair.

 

Performs all duties normally assigned to less skilled employees on a temporary or emergency basis.

 

Performs duties with due regard for personal safety for himself or others and assists in the training of others in proper safety procedures.

 

Has the ability to perform all Laborer tasks and some Carpenter career ladder tasks such as concrete and carpentry.

 

Ability to identify and maintain workplace safety.

 

Performs all related duties as required.

 

Qualifications

 

High School Diploma

 

Experience:

   

    A.    Ability to operate two (2) of the seven (7) categories of heavy equipment that the city owns;

B.     Ability to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above duties.

  C.    One to two years of experience performing the above or related duties.

                                                               OR

    D.     An equivalent combination of education or experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of various light to heavy equipment; knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to construction and equipment operation; working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations; working knowledge of construction methods and procedures typical to city service systems; some knowledge of equipment parts and preventative maintenance for the same.

·        Operation of simple to complex heavy equipment; ability to operate heavy equipment in various conditions, ability to perform manual tasks for sustained periods of time, ability to perform minor equipment maintenance and repair; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to read prints and plans; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, the public, and supervisors.

 

Special Qualifications

 

  • Must possess a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License.

     

Physical requirements and demands

 

  • This role requires physical work, with the employee frequently required to move about, position self upon, and ascend/descend over and/or upon varying terrain, surfaces, and physical structures.
  • Essential duties require the ability to operate motor vehicles, including light trucks, automobil es, and heavy equipment.
  • The employee must be able to move equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • The employee must be able to inspect documents, equipment, and workmanship of repairs and must have the ability to recognize potential hazards, including sounds and scents. The employee must observe all happenings in their surroundings, and effectively exchange accurate information with others.
  • While performing duties of this job, the employee may be work in conditions that are wet, dry, dirty, and/or unpleasant conditions. The employee must be able to work inside and outside, in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures, and may work around hazards that are natural, operational, traffic-related, or electrical.
  • Must frequently perform work in stressful situations, because of human behavior and/or conflict.
  • Some evening and weekend work required.

     

Supervision exercised

 

May provide close supervision to laborers.
