Position Summary

Facilitates the safe and efficient performance of surgical procedures.

  • Prepares surgical operating suite with drapes, solutions, instruments, equipment and supplies. Ensures good working order of equipment and instruments.
  • Assists with preparing, transporting, positioning and draping patients.
  • Passes instruments to physician during surgery. Continually accounts for number and location of instruments and supplies during surgery.
  • Receives and processes specimens for delivery to the laboratory
  • Demonstrates competence in preparing and cleaning of OR suites before and between procedures based on patient’s infection class. Assists in terminal cleaning at end of day. Restocks supplies when necessary.
  • Consistently adheres to aseptic technique. Maintains and monitors the sterile field.
  • Observes and monitors sterile field for breaks in surgical asepsis. Checks package integrity, expiration dates, and chemical indicator when opening sterile items on to the sterile field.
  • Prepares for each and every procedure by reviewing Physician preference cards, collaborating with circulating nurse and surgeon and utilizing other resources, as needed (more experienced staff, publications, vendor resources, manuals, etc.)
  • Assures the presence of all necessary instrumentation, supplies and equipment and that they are in working order prior to the beginning of each case
  • Exhibits knowledge and understanding of the sterilization process and required biological monitoring for all the sterilization equipment.
  • Scrubs and assists the surgeon in the performance of surgical procedures, working under the surgeon’s direction
  • Participates in the "Time out" process ensuring correct surgery, correct patient, correct site and side as part of the surgical team as per hospital policy.
  • Consistently comes to a "Hard Stop" and is supportive of the Circulator RN during the "Time out" process
  • Responsible for collection, identification and verification of specimens with the Circulator RN. Demonstrates care of specimens in a manner that minimizes the potential for any errors or specimen mix-up.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Malignant Hyperthermia including location of cart and treatment and care of the patient in crisis.
  • Performs counts of needles, sponges, instruments and other countable items with the RN Circulator as per hospital policy. Effectively communicates counts with the physician and adheres to policy for incorrect counts.
  • Communicates effectively to optimize patient care, promote positive human relations and contributes to the supportive and cooperative work environment
  • Consistently anticipates needs of surgeon before and throughout the procedure Appropriately responds to the patient in an emergency or physically distressful situation
  • Demonstrates through knowledge of the inherent risks associated with the use of Electrosurgery units. Practices ESU safety precautions to minimize risk to the patients.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe, aseptic, and orderly environment including equipment and supplies
  • Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self-motivated; manages activity and time; does not waste time
  • Participates in the re-stocking, re-supplying and cleaning of operating rooms, specialty carts and storage area
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care and operation of all surgical equipment
  • Demonstrates understanding and utilization of cost containment principles related to all resources (supplies, personnel, time, etc.)
  • Assists the physician in performing endoscopy procedures while maintaining patients’ privacy by preventing exposure.
  • Performs endoscopy reprocessing while strictly adhering to all critical steps required during the reprocessing.
  • Contributes to the teamwork of the department through cooperation and willingness to go above and beyond what is expected
  • Orients new staff and acts as a preceptor insuring, they are well trained and competent as required.
  • Takes responsibility to assist the Circulator nurses in maintain and updating physician preference cards as needed.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of instrument reprocessing and actively assists in the processing of instruments and equipment, as needed.
  • Thoroughly cleans each instrument, disassembling all parts and cleaning all lumens
  • Performs tray assemblage, proper packaging and preparation of all applicable supplies for sterilization.
  • Consistently utilizes tray component cards, ensuring completion and proper placement. Assists with updating tray component cards, as requested
  • Immediately reports missing or damaged tray/package components to supervisor. Replaces items or obtains direction to assemble incomplete trays

Education Requirements

High School Diploma

Must be able to obtain BLS within 60 days of hire.

Position requires on call hours during the week and on weekends
