About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Assistant Director Export Controls and Research Security, the Compliance Analyst I is part of team responsible for managing Brown University’s export control and research security program, and for supporting Brown’s Conflict of Interest and Research Security programs. While the focus of this position will be on export controls and research security, depending on the unit needs, the position may, at times provide significant support to the Conflict of Interest and Commitment and Research Integrity programs, working under the direction of both, the Assistant Director Export Controls and Research Security and the Assistant Director Conflict of Interest and Research Integrity.

This position assists with assessments of international activities related to research, teaching, travel, and shipping, conducts complex analyses of export control scenarios that arise in connection with common University activities, and advises faculty, students, and administrators regarding appropriate policies and procedures. The Compliance Analyst I prepares applications for export control licenses, devises and implements control plans, conducts requisite screening, reviews agreements that include export control and sanctions terms and/or global engagements, and performs quality assurance monitoring to ensure related compliance.

In addition, the Compliance Analyst I supports the University’s Conflict of Interest (COI) program. Working with the Assistant Director of Conflict of Interest and Research Integrity, the Compliance Analyst I assists with annual and ad hoc faculty COI reporting and disclosure, independently reviews cases involving potential conflicts of interest and conflicts of commitment, support the Conflict-of-Interest Review Board (COIRB), and supports the implementation and monitoring of conflict management plans.

The Compliance Analyst I develops and helps administers relevant compliance training and education to a wide variety of University stakeholders and interfaces with external regulators and University visitors.

The Compliance Analyst I has a working knowledge of all applicable regulations related to export controls, sanctions, and research security, is familiar with regulations and policies related to Research Integrity, including COI related regulations and policies.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1 to 2 years related experience. Or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred:

  • Experience in export control, research security, COI, or Research Integrity compliance.

Job Competencies

  • Must be a self-starter, detailed oriented, and committed to a high degree of discretion

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply complex, detailed regulations, with limited guidance and/or direction required

  • Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to present to large and small audiences, and a customer-oriented attitude

  • Must possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.

  • Ability to review and understand technical data for export classifications

  • Must be able to operate specialized software (e.g., Visual Compliance, InfoEd) with proficiency or have the ability to learn
