BYU Business Systems Manager in PROVO, Utah

Business Systems Manager

This position is responsible for the planning, development, support, management, and coordination of all information and business systems and functions for BYU Dining Services and its associated business units and operations.

What you'll do in this position:

  1. Eatec System Administration
  • Technical supervision of Eatec, Dining Service's "Dining Management System". This is Dining's core system touching almost every aspect of dining operations, including inventory management, procurement, menu planning, nutrition, and accounting.
  • Ensure high system reliability with uninterrupted service.
  • Manage interfaces between Eatec and other systems (Workday, POS vendors, EDI vendors). Oversee the process of identifying and resolving data exchange issues.
  • Administer security and establish controls within Eatec.
  1. Eatec System Improvements

Dining Services went live with Eatec SaaS on October 7, 2024. We are the first complex user of this new cloud-based completely re-coded version of the system. The new system is largely stabilized, but the project will continue throughout 2025 as we continue to work through bugs and make improvements.

  • Act as the project's lead technical contact and business analyst. Establish the project plan with the General Manager in coordination with the vendor. Enforce project timelines and keep the project in motion.
  • Orient and manage vendor consultants throughout the project.
  • Coordinate regularly with Dining areas throughout the project to build working solutions for all groups and use cases.
  1. Personnel Management
  • Technical supervision of 2-3 technical teams in the Dining Technology Group. Hire and train student developers in supervised positions.
  • Create a training structure and identify additional training opportunities for Dining Technology employees.
  • Manage and mentor members to accomplish individual and departmental goals.
  • Supervise and monitor programming and development efforts, ensuring alignment with BYU/ industry standards and department procedures.
  1. Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing, and Reporting Management
  • Oversee reporting development operations, prioritizing reporting needs based on feedback from the Dining executive team and area management.
  • Oversee data warehousing and data pipelining projects in connection with reporting needs.
  • Establish procedures and coordinate training in BI (business intelligence) and ETL (extract, transform, load) tools used in data warehousing and reporting projects, including Tableau and Informatica. Establish checks and controls to ensure data accuracy.
  1. Vending System Management
  • Oversee Dining Technology efforts to support BYU Vending's technology solutions, including an ongoing project to upgrade vending payment systems across campus and an upcoming RFP for a new vending management system.
  • Regularly meet with vending tech (Physical Facilities) and vending management to coordinate BYU Vending technology efforts.
  • Support ongoing efforts to improve vending reader connectivity across BYU.
  • Create reporting and other systems to support BYU Vending and more effective vending systems management.
  1. Other Responsibilities
  • Maintain an understanding and working knowledge of trends and directions in Dining and General Technology.
  • Attend trade shows, conferences, and seminars as appropriate.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the General Manager.

What qualifies you for this role: 

Required:

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU  
  • A Bachelor's degree in a technology field with at least four years of experience in a technology-related position OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:

  • A Master's degree in a technology field with at least four years of experience in technology management.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licens s, certifications:

Required

  • Experience managing ERP, inventory management, or menu management systems.
  • Strong accounting and accounting systems background.
  • Expertise in solutions design, business process modeling, and database design. Ability to critically review and evaluate existing business and technology practices.
  • Technical aptitude and a clear understanding of the capabilities of technology resources.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with current development methodologies and best practices.
  • Expert knowledge of (and past experience working with) SQL, ETL tools, and business intelligence tools.
  • Ability to set and meet realistic deadlines.
  • Ability to manage time and client expectations effectively.

Preferred

  • Experience in food service technology systems implementation and management.
  • Demonstrated experience in project & product management, following through, and successfully meeting the needs of clients.
  • Experience managing technology staff.

  • 2 warehouses
  • 2 manufacturing facilities and additional production kitchens

Dining Services employs 2,000 people (around 1,800 of these are part-time, student employees).
