Department Information

Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP) provides comprehensive psychiatric and medical evaluation and treatment by a multidisciplinary treatment team. This include: 24 hour nursing care and assessment: psychiatric intervention and evaluation; psychological services; psycho-social services; occupational therapy. educational and vocational rehabilitation services and recreation therapy. Patients are admitted from throughout the state from correctional, state mental health systems, and other community facilities for long and short term treatment under court authority, as well as transfers from within CMHHIP. Legal statuses of patients include 27-65 Civil commitments (M-1, M-3, Short and Long Term certifications) Dual Diagnosed (Substance Abuse and Mentally Ill); Developmental Disability/Mentally Ill; Incompetent to Proceed (ITP); Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity or Impaired Mental Condition (NGRI or NGR-IMC); court ordered evaluations for Sanity, Sex Offender issues, Competency; and Correctional transfers from Department of Corrections. CMHHIP provides psychiatric services for adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

Job Description

The Department of Occupational Therapy (OT) provides a full range of OT services, including standardized and specialized assessment, skilled observation, progress evaluation, treatment planning, and therapy services as ordered by physicians and/or medical practitioners.

This position will oversee and provide Occupational Therapy services including evaluation and individual/group treatment and to support the goals of the Occupational Therapy department in alignment with the mission and vision of CMHHIP.

As the Occupational Therapist Supervisor you can expect to:

  • Provide direct patient therapy to restore physical and mental life functions, and mitigate the disabling effects of injury, disease and medical or surgical treatments

  • Interview clients and review histories, test client and interpret results, assess client pathologies and rehabilitative potential, develop rehabilitation and/or treatment plans, provide treatment using a variety of techniques, assess treatment results, and prepare records and reports on patient progress

  • Documents the initial Occupational Therapy assessment and provides the Occupational Therapy plan of care to the treatment team and the COTA. Response is required on the 405 form with the assessment attached

  • Completes monthly or yearly reassessments updating the progress and Occupational Therapy portion of the plan of care

  • Provides direct patient care in groups or individualized treatment sessions

  • Provide clinical and administrative supervision to OT staff providing OT specific treatment. Responsibilities include monthly clinical supervision, reviewing competency, reviewing treatment provided, and reviewing of documentation/billing completed by the COTAs

  • Councils and provides employees with supervision, feedback, advice and training

  • Provides employees with guidance in handling difficult or complex problems or in resolving escalated complaints or disputes

  • Maintains security and teaches safety and emergency procedures within the Occupational Therapy clinic

  • Conducts performance plan, review and appraisal meetings, conducts departmental orientation to newly hired employees, approves leave requests and other duties requiring supervisory input and/or authorization. Provides documentation to support recommended corrective and disciplinary actions, signs performance plans, reviews and evaluations and resolves informal grievances. Position starts the hiring process, interviews applicants, and recommends hire, promotion, or transfer

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current, valid Colorado State licensure as a licensed Occupational Therapist.

AND

  • Three (3) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Substitutions:

  • None

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy

  • Previous or current mental health experience

  • Current or previous supervisory experience

  • Familiarity with various evaluation and screening tools

Special Qualifications:

  • Must maintain certification through NBCOT. Must be able to write and speak effectively documenting findings and maintain accurate records. Interacts directly with patients, some of whom are considered highly dangerous. Responsibilities include taking patients from a secured area to less secure area for treatment, which may involve physical control. Must have the ability to comprehend, teach and execute Occupational therapy programs to patients, staff and family members. Must demonstrate ability to work well and effectively communicate with other team members

Conditions of Employment:

  • A pre-employment criminal background check will be conducted as part of the selection process as this position is deemed to have direct contact with vulnerable persons. Felony convictions, conviction of crimes of moral turpitude, or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from being considered for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges or convictions, it is your responsibility to provide the CDHS Background Unit with an official disposition of any charges

  • This position must possess and maintain licensure through the State of Colorado as a licensed Occupational Therapist

  • Valid Colorado Driver's License

  • Travel: Position requires travel for trainings, meetings and to transport patients in a state vehicle.

  • This position will be paid biweekly.

  • Must successfully pass a TB (tuberculosis) Test.

  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
