Position Details:
Summary of Duties:
The Scientific Assistant will perform laboratory and greenhouse research related to characterizing herbicide resistance in weed species. Specific research will require the incumbent to perform molecular techniques (e.g. DNA and RNA extraction, PCR and qPCR) and general greenhouse tasks (e.g. mixing soil, filling pots, sowing seeds, watering, etc.). This research will be performed in collaboration with WSU Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and the USDA-ARS Wheat Health, Genetics, and Quality Research Unit, whose mission is to provide solutions to growers of dryland crops in the Pacific Northwest.
Job Duties
Laboratory and Greenhouse Research | 55%
• Adapts, modifies or develops new procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project.
• Performs and supports a full range of greenhouse and laboratory studies.
• Collect, analyze and interpret research data.
• Searches for literature pertinent to area of research for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory or greenhouse.
Supervision of Hourly Workers | 20%
• Manage student/hourly personnel.
• Train student/hourly personnel on proper lab and greenhouse procedures including but not limited to safety, equipment use, sample collection, basic testing, and plot maintenance.
Laboratory and Greenhouse Coordinator | 20%
• Conducts general laboratory maintenance and routine care of scientific instrumentation.
• Records and maintains an inventory of relevant laboratory and greenhouse consumables.
• Maintains a safe working environment.
Other Duties | 5%
• Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
• A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience.
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
• A Master's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.
• Must be able to obtain a pesticide license through the Washington State Department of Agriculture.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Professional experience in a molecular biology or plant biology laboratory after completing bachelor's degree.
