POSITION DETAILS

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY. LaGuardia offers more than 60 associate degree and certificate programs in six Fields of Interest: Business & Entrepreneurship; Education & Public Service; Engineering, Science & Technology; Health & Wellness; Languages, Culture & Society; and Visual & Performing Arts. In 2022, LaGuardia served over 23,000 students in pre-college, associate degree, and continuing education programs. Consistent with the demographics of Queens, 52 percent of LaGuardia students are born outside of the United States. They come from 130 countries and speak 54 heritage languages. More than half (54 percent) are first-generation college students. Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest come from Brooklyn and beyond. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (88 percent), 57 percent are women, 29 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-eight percent of LaGuardia students are Hispanic, almost double the threshold of 25 percent required by the US Department of Education for designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Seventy-three percent of LaGuardia students receive some form of financial aid. Close to half of LaGuardia students attend part-time (49%), often because they need to work to support their families. Under the direction of the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Advising provides strategic and operational leadership in the development, assessment and delivery of innovative and holistic advisement services across the campus. Supervising Accelerated Studies in Associates Program (ASAP), College Discovery (CD), and Student Advising Services (SAS), the Assistant Dean will ensure that operations of the areas are guided by the College’s Strategic Plan.

  • Leads the process of developing a strategic approach across advisement areas and the inclusion of transfer planning and career exploration into the advisement process;

  • Facilitates students’ access to high-quality, responsive, and high-impact advisement across all programs and fields of study to ensure that students are presented with timely, accurate, and consistent information to help them in their decision-making in pursuit of their educational goals;

  • Works with advising directors to oversee the provision of proactive advising, including group programming for potential and current students; integrates best practices that support increased retention and graduation rates such as credit momentum, timely major declaration, and connection to campus resources and opportunities;

  • Seeks out innovative solutions to help advisors meet the needs of students and propose new approaches and ways of working;

  • Utilizes research and theory related to student learning, advising, and retention to promote student success;

  • Proposes new and revised policies and practices to enhance promote student success and guides their implementation;Collaborates with department chairs, academic program directors, and others to anticipate and meet the evolving needs of students amidst curricular and other programmatic changes to support student success;

  • Coordinates with colleagues across the college to ensure that the student advising model complements the College’s faculty and peer mentoring efforts;

  • Ensures the integrity of the ASAP and College Discovery models through close collaboration with program director/coordinator and Central Program offices;

  • Builds a team culture that promotes regular reflection, assessment, and professional development for advisors;

  • Develops, implements and assesses utilization of across-the-board student support technologies, such as EAB Navigate, across advising areas;

  • Facilitates the development of advising benchmarks and regularly review of advising practices based on data and other feedback and makes necessary adjustments to ensure effectiveness of advising and related services and programming;

  • Fosters and sustains positive collaborative working relationships with colleagues in Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and across the college, such as: Career Services, financial Aid, Bursar, Counseling, and Admissions;

  • Represents Advising and/or Academic Affairs at College, CUNY, and other external programs and university events/meetings, as needed;

  • Supports student enrollment, registration and retention efforts;

  • Serves on committees as needed;

· Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Provost or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's or doctoral degree preferred.

Experience in providing direct college student support, counseling, or advising.

Demonstrated commitment to, and experience with, programs in support of student development.

Demonstrated administrative and supervisory experience with a record of increasing responsibility in higher education.

Evidence of a strong commitment to serving a diverse student body and to building an inclusive campus environment.

Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.

Collaborative leadership style and a record of building consensus and supporting productive participatory decision-making.

Demonstrated skills in data analysis in support of program assessment and continuous improvement.

Demonstrated investment in the professional development of those under their supervision.

Experience using student information systems such as, but not limited to, CUNYFirst/Peoplesoft, EAB Navigate, and Degree Works.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$115,000 - $135,000

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
